Will google punish nofollow wordpress.com links to my site?

Hi everyone I have a little dilemma I hoped you guys can help me with.

I have a couple wordpress.com sites (10) that are about different topics within my industry, they all rank pretty well so I wanted to use them to direct some traffic to my main site which has pages about the same specific topics.

So my question is will my main site get punished if I link a bunch of wordpress.com sites to my main site as it would like unnatural to have that many links from one domain?

I'm thinking of using nofollow when linking to my site, would that insure that I wouldn't get punished?

Would really appreciate if someone could put me on the right direction.

Cheers,

Of course not. It's a great idea, this is called backlinking and don't include the nofollow.

I wouldn't expect Google to have any issues with that, although you may want to consider varying your anchor text and also not always linking to the home page. Diversity in your anchor text (keeping it Target or LSI keyword related) and destination URL is always a good thing to keep in mind too when back linking. Likewise, link velocity - don't build them all on the same day - spread them out a bit... With only 10 links I don't think you've much to be concerned about, likewise I wouldn't worry about making them No Follow (unless you're interested in human traffic rather than any credit towards to SERP). Why not take a look at your own backlink profile using a tool such as www.ahrefs.com and take a peak at your competitors too so as to gain other backlink source ideas... Hope it goes well :-)

If it did, then I guess my next waste-of-time-project will be to
create some wordpress sites, link to my competitiors.

      That'll show em!

There is no such thing as dofollow. Nofollow was never
intended for such nonsense in the first place.

Thanks for the feedback guys, So Paul your saying go ahead without any adjustments? My main priority is to get the traffic from my wordpress.com sites to my main site.

It would be more than 10 links, since I'm thinking to use sitewide banner links and one link from the home page. So the strategy i'm considering is making the sitewide link nofollow but keeping one link on the homepage as dofollow.

Would that be a safe strategy?

That will be a safe backlinking strategy and you should not think too much about the dofollow and noffolow factor either. When you have the options make the backlink as dofollow, which will help you to rank your website for relevent keywords also.

Make sure you are not using same anchor text to link back to your main website. Use variations of anchor text instead.

Before linking the websites to your money site make sure you don't have any footprint(s) that would tie you to all of the websites, e.g., Adsense code, affiliate tracking IDs, etc. If you do, I would use a nofollow link or remove the footprint just to be on the safe side.

Google SHOULD have no problem with you linking the sites together (especially if the linking makes sense, e.g., the domains are in the same niche), but if they believe (under manual review for example-unlikely) that 1) all sites are owned by the same entity/person and 2) that the sites are being used to manipulate the SERPs, you will have a problem.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I think I will mostly use nofollow just to be on the safe side.
