How to Find the Best Keywords for a Niche Site ?

Hello Warriors,
I was a bit confused while doing keyword research yesterday .....

I am using LongTail Pro tool to do the research. Yesterday I was looking for some insurance related keywords (as they offer the highest CPC) and I finalized one keyword that had around 5000 Global Monthly searches.

However that particular keyword showed the 'Advertiser Competition' as 95+; so would I be able to rank the site faster or will it ask for more work?

I am really confused at this point. The searches are quite okay but the competition is the thing that I am worried about. Any expert who uses LongTail Pro can help me out here.

It would be of much help.
Thanks.

It'll be better to use local monthly search at 500 - 1k range so the competition doesn't really hard. If you use that keyword that has 5k global monthly searches then you need to put a lot of work.

Regarding advertiser...the more advertiser competition means that keyword has high value to work on.

    Hope this helps

"Advertiser competition" should be referring to the amount of Adwords competition. This can be pretty decent indicator of that a keyword should earn a pretty decent amount per click. (More competition = higher costs to the advertiser, and higher earnings on your end.)

To get a look at the competition, you NEED to analyze the top 10 results. And, to a greater extent, the top 3. I wouldn't even worry about the overall competition. Just page 1.

Per Spencer Haws, the developer of Long Tail Pro, the advertiser competition is just a scale between 0 and 100 that represents HOW MANY ADVERTISERS there are for that particular keyword advertising on Google.com.

So in short, there are a lot of people using paid ads for that keyword if it has a advertiser competition of 95. It does not necessarily mean that it will be hard to rank for it, but more than likely, it probably will be, especially in the insurance niche.

Like one of the warriors said earlier in this thread, you really need to analyze your competition on page 1 of Google for this keyword. Check the PR of the domains, domain age, # of back links to the domain and ranking page, on page SEO, etc.

Chances are that those are all going to be very high numbers, and if they are, it will probably take you a very long time to rank highly for that keyword.

But if the competition is at a level that you think you can handle, go for it. Make that money!

      Nuff said,

      Fred

To second GoBlog in using local search count, try not to go for keywords which have less than 350.

Compare with different sources when analyzing your competition.

Try not to go for keywords which have 1 or 2 authority sites in the first page of Big G.

Remember, competition isn't defined by how many people are competing for something or how hard they're competing.

Its defined by you and you only.

    How resourceful you are.
    How well you can compete.
    How smart you are.
How well you can pick your battles.
    How experienced.
How much $ you have to invest upfront (if any).

Its almost never about the actual competition. The better you can compete and pick your battles, the less competition you will always have.

Like the keyword you're targeting right now, would probably be a joke for certain people to rank for.

For others, they might waste the next 3 years and still not rank for it.

Thats why this question is technically impossible to answer.
One person will tell you its competitive, another person won't even see competition.

The best advice I can give you, if you're new, keep 2 projects. One where you aim low, to feel a sense of control & see results.

Another where you aim high, to challenge yourself and keep your ego in check.

Basically like a plan A and plan B.
    Never just have 1 plan.

    Good luck! - Red

Have you use the tools within Google Analytics? I have found that simply using Google analytics and the keyword tool(s) offered there provide more that enough insight into this for me. Take this from me, If you want to earn a living online my recommendation is to pick a single niche you love and throw all your focus, time and energy into it. If you pursue the path you are on, I predict a fiery burnout in a short amount of time.

You actually WANT a high advertiser competition. That generally means that you can monetize the site well.

But if you're new to the insurance niche, prepare for some tough competition. 5000 search keywords like "best dog food for my poodle" may be easy to rank for....

...but ANYTHING >1000 in the insurance niche is tough. Doable, but tough.

Agreed. Especially if you're new. It's most likely going to be an exercise in frustration.

This formula was in the beginning of my online success.

So you 1st do exact and then move on around that?

How much are you earning like and you have got into #1 in some KWS?

If however i have made into #1 for some kws , you assure that I will get clicks? my niche is some physical product based that has both affiliate and adsense potential..
