EMD all but disappeared but now BOOM, Page 1. What happened?

I've had a particular EMD in the diabetic niche (1,110,000 results) that fluctuated between the number 6 and 10 spot for a year and then last year, all but disappeared into the ether. Well beyond page 50.

Google mailed me an adsense check yesterday which caught me offguard since I let all my adsense domains expire except the diabetic one...

After looking at my adsense reporting, this is what I find:

Jun: $ 1.45
Jul: $ .84
Aug: $ 1.97
Sep: $ .07
Oct: $ .34
Nov: $ .89
Dec: $ .51
Jan: $15.36 <---
Feb: $19.71 <---
Mar: $29.55 <---

What happened in January for this EMD to jump back to the first page of Google? Did a major update come out that favors EMDs?

The latest Panda update didn't target EMDs. From what I've read, Google penalized sites with rubbish content, backlinks, and unnatural anchor text.

Although I don't build EMDs anymore, the existing ones haven't been effected at all.

Yeah, typo. It should say "my" existing EMDs.

I also noticed a "bounce-back" effect for my EMDs... never know what really happened and what brought them back!

But its nice to see some traffic and $$$

I'm smacking my head though since I let some 12 EMD's go, a couple of which in their prime brought in about $600/year each and last year less than $20/year each.

Not gonna complain about the free money. Goes to my daughter's Hawaii play fund. :-)

very common misconception that Google penalized EMDs, but that couldnt be further from the truth. What Google actually did was penalize sites for over optimization...which just so happened to included a ton of EMDs...
