Help! Site Ranking Well in Some Data Centers But Not All

Hey Warriors

I'm looking if anyone can offer me any insights into this.

I have a site which I thought was ranking well, however that doesn't seem to be the case.

When I check the site from different IPs within the US it shows that the site is on page 1 and on other IPs it shows that it's on page 5 and for some keywords it shows it's not listed.

This site was ranking well, before but I think google dropped it when I was giving too many links to it, but now it seems to have recovered when I check, but on other data centers it still shows it prior to recovering.

So the question is why does it show it recovered in some data centers and not others?

How do I fix this?

It's been about 2 months since it's recovered from some data centers. Is this site still penalized or what's going on?

There are no warnings in web master tools.

Any insights would be appreciated!

There can be a lag between data centers, but nothing more than usually between 24-48 hours.

Was one of the IPs you've searched from your own? If so, I presume you've taken all necessary steps i.e. personalisation? Make sure you're logged out, disable customisations based on web history etc (BETTER YET, just search through the AdPreview tool).

It also depends on the keyword - on Google UK, results are increasingly being localised, even generic search terms i.e. a search for 'SEO training' while in London produces far different results than a search for 'SEO training' while in Manchester i.e. while you're physically located in those places, or search from an an IP which is set to those locations. While this was the case one year ago, it's even more noticeable now.

In other words, we'd need more information.

Typically, data centers don't always synchronize info. It would most likely take some time for your ranking to be the same in all data centers.

Are you aware that google made some changes in their algorithm in January? Because of this, lots of websites lost their rankings. Work on building quality backlinks utilizing genuine resources. The rankings will get back on better positions.

        Thanks for the response guys!
@AravGupta, I had first page rankings till their update in January 16th or 17th, then the rankings dropped to page 5. In about the second month of February, the rankings in some data centers recovered, but some data centers are still seeing the penalized rankings. This seems to be issue of why some data centers are still showing the penalty while others aren't.

After the January 16th, 17th update I stopped all link building and the results just improved on their own on some data centers.

Has anyone run into something similar?

  • Ranking is never constant, that is the reason you see in webmaster "average position". You need to work on many aspects of onpage and off page optimization to get the ball rolling

Usually there are differences in ranking in the SERPS because that data center has been tuned for a different geographical area. The user’s IP also has an effect on geographical locations in search.

You may want to use a tool like Microsite Masters that track rankings. I find it accurate and reliable in terms of giving you the exact SERP and keyword ranking. You get the exact rank no matter where in the world you are.
