Images in Search Results

Why do the Google (possibly others) search results show an image for some results and not for others? For example, if I search on "java example servlet filter" (how's that for nerdy search terms) or, shortcut to it, by clicking on:

https://www.google.com/#hl=en&output...servlet+filter

why does the first result show the blogger's picture? But the next ones don't have an image?

Thanks,
Anne

Although google does not guarantee an your image will show up in the SERPS, to do it you need to link your content to your Google+ profile.

Here is a link showing how to do it: Author information in search results - Webmaster Tools Help

I don't think that G+ is enough to rank high an image... You still need to do SEO for it!

It's the picture from the author's GPlus profile page. If you do a search on Rich Snippets, you will find out how to do it. It can be quite complicated.

Basically you need to link your site to your Google Plus profile and your Google plus profile to your site. The tricky bit is knowing the link code to use for publisher and author.

One of the links to the GPlus profile will look something like this:

    <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/55555555072666417682" rel="author" target="_blank">Fred Nurk</a>
