Hi Everyone,

I just contacted Adsense this week to ask if I could use a popup to collect subscribers while running Adsense. I thought you couldn't but this was their response:

You can implement ads on your blog which has a pop-up window as long as the window do not overlap the ad and causes accidental clicks. High volume of invalid clicks may lead to suspension of your account.

I sent a followup asking if I could then use a Lightbox, which of course greys out the page until the popup is cleared negating the possibility of accidently clicking an ad. I'm still waiting for an answer on this.

MY QUESTION: Is anyone using a subscriber popup with AS (Lightbox) and have you had trouble?

Thanks in advance.

Ken

Google themselves has ad codes that use lightbox.

I had someone buy that ad on a site of mine.

Yes, I put adsense on the page.

I know you are not supposed to put anything up
that hinders someone from surfing out.

Here's what happened with me. The traffic, from
google, went down like a rocket a little but after
the ad went up. This was during the time that google
was talking about too many ads about the fold. I thought
maybe the ad was causing some algo to distrust the page.

After a month, the ad (which was a call to action like yours)
was not paying off anywhere near what adsense was before.

I cancelled the ad and have never looked back.

It might be okay, but it gives a lousy visitor experience, invalid
clicks, and probably more trouble than it's worth.

There are better ways of getting subscribers. Why chase them
    away?

My original thought on the TOS thing, was that if they are
a google product, and/or google uses them, they must be okay.

If a live person sent that message, shame on them for not knowing google
    uses ads like that.

      Hi Paul,

      Thanks for responding.

I'm a bit confused by part of your answer...actually I wasn't clear in my question:

After a month, the ad (which was a call to action like yours)
was not paying off anywhere near what adsense was before.

I don't have any adsense on the page right now....just a Lightbox popup...which performs great. Sounds like you had adsense and added the popup....unless I misunderstood you?

Feedburner uses a popup to verify emails when subscribing to an email list. Google owns Feedburner.

      Hi Yukon,

Do you use Adsense with a popup yourself?

I use Feedburner for building email list on my Adsense sites, so yes, I guess I use a popup (email verify/captcha). The actual subscribe box is in my sidebar & footer of the web page/s.
