Whatever happened to 'Link Velocity'?!?

Hey WF,

I am in the process of building a review post for a sweet KW I've just found. After checking out my top #10 competition (link profiles), I found one guy who has a profile of over 10K (verified using Majestic and Ahrefs). The crazy thing is on one specific day he had over 3K links indexed. How is that possible??? I thought Google paid attention to 'Link Velocity' and would slap you down for unnatural links?

    3000 in a day would be suspicious for most sites, however with a site like Wikipedia it's very possible. So it really depends on what site we're talking about. If it's a new site that had zero or few links yesterday and all of a sudden gets 3000 links the next day, it's only a matter of (a very short) time before they'll get penalized.

      Good point raised by Haven...

      there might be some other reasons behind not getting penalize.

      It's a good point but maybe sites like Wiki are immune because they are massive authority sites?

      Anyway it doesn't matter. I think it's safe to say that Link Velocity doesn't exist or Google doesn't care how many links you build per day.

      I used to blast an auto generated site that made very few money once.

      50.000 blog comments
      25.000 xrumer profile links

      The site danced for a week, however it looked more like tanked.

      After those 7 days it came back, at the original position, no gain, no loss.

      That's a whole lot of links so that kind of shows how far you can go with Google when you do it once.

      I waited 2 weeks, and did the same again, this time the site tanked for good.

      Crappy "SEO people" try to sell you on the idea of velocity so that you keep using their links that disappear or are completely worthless.

    Keep in mind that 3k is when AHREFS found the links...not when they were created or indexed by Google.

    Sometimes ahrefs and majestic find new areas of sites (or completely new sites) and add them all to their index at once.

    It can make it look like the site had a spike when it could just be a new find my ahrefs of majestic.

    So, if someone's post, image, page, etc...happens to go viral and a lot of people start linking to it right away, Google will slap them?

    This is news to me. In fact, I heard through the grapevine that Google actually watches for social signals of sudden linking to something so they can push it up in the rankings. You know, kind of goes along with that whole "wanting to be relevant to what people are looking for" thing that search engines are supposed to do.

    What do I know though?

      This makes sense. Google can't slap you on some days when websites linking to you reaches a pinnacle. Too many sites would be smacked down for that.

    Link velocity is only important when creating low quality links, ie; send them to your site all at once and you get slapped, send them to your site slowly and your rankings will jump around as Google trying to figure out what's going on!

    Keep in mind that different spikes in links is a completely natural process. What's not natural is the same amount of links being created on a regular basis.

    Think of a news site. As soon as a new story comes out or a monumental event happens they will see a 1000000% increase in backlinks in one day. These are from real humans, not spammy software programs.

      How long ago were those links created? Google may give them credit for them initially, and punish them later. If a site truly went viral, they shouldn't be punished for it.

    Like most things in SEO, the theory of Link Velocity is not a Law.

    It would be Law if it could be replicated in all instances by all interested parties using the same factors.

    However - it is not. Since it doesn't operate as a Law, people have the choice of viewing the Theory as fact or fiction, depending on their perspective.
