Google and domain extensions

Does anyone know how google looks at domain extensions besides .com (.net, .org, etc) and do they rank sites with NON .com extensions lower than .com sites?

I always assumed if your domain had the proper keywords in it google wouldn't care what the extension is, but I just did a test on 10 different searches and all of the first page results were .com.

This could be a total noob question so I apologize if that is the case!! I have never seen a discussion on this before

the .com TLD is always better. beside google is more likely .com TLD, people usually easy to remember the .com TLD rather than other TLD

    Hey,

    Here is the correct answer:

Google has roughly 25,270,000,000 .com's indexed in the search results.

    And roughly 4,370,000,000 .net's, 4,280,000,000 .org's and 635,000,000 .info's indexed, etc...

The conclusion is this, Google does not care what domain extension you have, and the only reason you see so many .com's is because there are over 25 BILLION domains indexed, in comparison with only 4 billion orgs, nets and only 635 million .info domains.

That's why you see so many .com's ranked on page 1, because of the sheer amount of them registered in comparison with other domain extensions.

  • Dave,

Per the other members, search engines don’t care what TLD you use.

In general, this is true but for localized rankings it can be very important to have one TLD over another. If you are trying to rank for terms in a specific country, having a country specific TLD can help. If you aren’t targeting a specific country then any TLD will work for you.

Here is a good post on that topic,

It still amazes me people think .edu or .gov domains are innately superior to other extensions - it has nothing to do with the extension and that is drawing completely the wrong conclusion. It has everything to do with the link profile pointing into the sites.

In answer to the OPs question, as above, there's no innate favoritism for any particular extension.

Google doesn't give any preferential treatment to any domain extension. No domain extension has better ranking bestowed on it. Every website must work hard to earn top ranking - it's never a given.
