Can I please add to Amy's question. Can someone explain what SERP stands for? Is it an acronym?

The tool that I use is a FireFox plugin called "Rank Checker" by seobook.com. It requires a little setup by you but I find it useful to check my SEO progress on client sites.

  • Ladies,
SERP is an acronymn that stands for Search Engine Results Page

To quickly find out what your search engine ranking is, go to a search engine of your choice and type in a keyword or phrase you think your website should be found under and look at the results. Different search engines use different algorithms so you results will most likely vary.
Google tool bar comes with a Page Ranking feature that is displayed when you selcet that option.
If you surf to your site and visit the various pages, the Page Ranking meter will tell you at what level Google ranks your page on a scale of 1 to 10.

I would have posted useful links with my response but since Im a newbie I am not allowed to post links

    Hi,

I don't use any tool to check out ranking. It would be better to do it manually.

In my opinion, there is no such tool that can give you an exact Search engine rank of your rank. I have even used "Rank Checker" by SEO Book but this tool also give very old results. My site is very placed at the Top rank in google but it still gives very old results. The best way is to find it out manually in different search engines.

RankChecker from SEOBook does not yield good result. There is lot of difference between the result of this tool & manual checking !

SEO Quake doesn't tell you where you rank in the search engines. Nice try (I guess). It is a good tool though.

I agree with what a few people said ... I prefer the manual way. There are tools which you can find by doing a Google search: search engine ranking check - Google Search

It would take too long for me to review them here. Maybe one day I'll blog it.

Manual method is looking up the keyword you are targeting in google and trying to find your site.

RankChecker is one of the best free tools. It show your average global SERP. Now that may not the SERP that you see due to various reasons: your Geographical location is different, you are querying a different data center, smart listings from Google if you are logged in, or you could be using a different browser (yes different browsers often yield different results).

No SERP checker is 100% accurate because there is no 100% of the time same result depending on where and when you do your query.

But for a great, quick, relatively accurate, and free SERP checker RankChecker is the best I've come accross.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, I'm not looking for my page rank. I'm looking for my results ranking. For example, if you search for "sleep problems," is my site number 14 or number 167 in the search results?

It doesn't appear there is a free tool to do this. Thanks anyway, everyone!

Amy, I suggest you use both the automated method and manual method. One of the members here already recommended "Rank Checker" by seobook.com. Though it is not 100%, it is a very close indication of your actual rankings. If your site actually ranks for a particular keyword, do a manual search to see where you really stand in the SERPs.

With Rank Checker, all you have to do is look in your Google Analytics, webmaster tools and/or your Webalizer stats to see what keywords your site shows up for. Grab all of those keywords and enter them into Rank Checker in bulk. You'll then see where you stand in the SERPs from 3 different engines.

hmmm... you just gave me an awesome idea. Don't know if you knew it or not, but Google just finally opened an API for Analytics, and I should be able to programatically grab the list of keyword phrases and stuff them into my SERP checker.

      Thanks for the idea.

I would like to be able to enter a list of my pages into a tool and then it tell me what keywords each page ranks for and on what page of google they appear.

    Does IBP do that?

Not that I know of sdboyle. The easiest way to do that is to use google analytics or statcounter.com and it will track every person that comes to your site through a keyword in the search engines. Double checking that gives you a pretty good idea what you are ranking for.

Nope, but Google has a tool that does that, it's call Google Webmaster Tools. And you don't even have to list your pages, Google crawls your site, tracks which keywords triggers visits to which pages and where your page ranked at the time the search was performed. The nice thing is it only shows you detail for listings that get clicks, so you don't waste time looking at keywords that receive no traffic.
