Hey everyone,

My site, Meditation Techniques for Beginners: How to Meditate Properly, is ranking strangely. About 3 weeks ago is was ranking around 35 but then all of a sudden it jumped back to 79. Then it slowly moved up again to about 54 and now it is starting to gradually move back to page 8 again???

Can you guys explain to me what is happening and whether it is good or bad or nothing?

Thanks

    The SERPs aren't static.
    • Adding/removing links can change a SERP position.
    • Competition can change a SERP position.
    • Changing content can change a SERP position.
    • Changing site structure (theme) can change a SERP position.

      What he said ^^^

      This is NORMAL.

The reason most people think it's strange and give it names like the Google Dance is because they're not tracking their rankings properly so they don't see how dynamic they are.

I had some software written to track all the rankings of all the keywords across many sites and I see positions moving every day across all sites - not just new sites, but several years old sites.

Google is constantly checking what content is out there and if you change nothing then you can guarantee your positions will bounce around because your competition IS changing their sites and Google is constantly finding other sites to rank.

Even if you're at the top of the SERPS, some brand new one page EMD domain could get an early artificial bounce to the top so Google can check if people like that content before putting it back where it belongs - the result - your positions will bounce around as other sites get shown for short times.

Don't sweat it - it's all normal, just get on with marketing your business and it will all work out.

I don't think it's only happening to you.
We all deal with it every time.
Google dance, that's most of us call it.

Keep posting unique and good quality contents to your site. It doesn't have to be daily.
Do backlinking, but don't spam the world.
    It should do any good.

Try to update your website regularly by using some fresh contents because Google compares your website with your competitors, Suppose, if your competitors have update their website by using some fresh content or else have modified their website with some new design then there is more of a chance that your keywords have lost rankings due to that.

My site too is facing the same problem after 17th January update. My rankings are still not recovered since then. It might be the combine effect of January update and Google Dance.

I have checked for spam links, over optimization and duplicate content. Everything looks good but don't know what causing my site not to recover from this.

As the updates become more frequent now, it could be a Google dance. If it is, then you should learn to groove to it. Constantly adding high quality content to your site and update often. Build links gradually and continue building to keep the link velocity.

You will need to build backlinks to help it become more stable in the search results. It is not bad for a website to move around the search results. However, if you are not ranking on the first page, you are not going to get much traffic anyway. By getting backlinks and continuing to publish quality content, you will be able to stabilize in a higher position and get more traffic.

If you didn't change anything to make it jump it was either competition moving or a Google update just reranking you, I saw a couple websites rankings jump up too end of March so it could have just been an update

    The Google Dance

    Hello Isamson,

You are not the first person to experience this and certainly will not be the last. It's frustrating when your all the efforts put into your website appear to end up ranking you chaotically with Google. And what's worse is this may continue for months.

What can be done about the Google Dance?

Some have had varying degrees of success using these methods to try and avoid the Google Dance:

    1. Only building quality links

    2. Avoid any duplicate content

    3. Add unique content often

    I hope these methods help.

It just happens with every one, and your niche is high competitive.

Your website is also a sub-domain & hosted in free!

TLD with premium hosting would be given high priority. Try change your Domain to TLD i.e; .com or .info or .net etc. Choose good hosting provider.

Usually it would cost anywhere from 65-85$(including domain+hosting) per year.

Well, I call it Google Hypocrisy! I don’t believe that you will magically be on the highest rank and stay in it forever, because people naturally link to your site with your quality contents.

This is the common issues for the NEWBIES, because of the lack of experience. You always need to spend money for advertising or do link baiting for you to get more and more links and to stay on the highest rank.

Normally we call it as Google Dance wherein ranking positions of the keywords change on regular basis, need not have to worry but ensure to perform your offsite activites on regular basis.

    Hello lsamson,
Its quite natural as competition is taking advantage and SE's will give edge to regularly updating sites than less updated. What you can opt is go for a regular link building exercise and revise your site's content with trending search queries. Recommend consulting an affordable SEO company to help you out stabilize your search positions.

The same problem, I am also experiencing for my website. Although this rank fluctuation is normal still it is frustrating. I have also checked the back links of my website. They are from good source. Still, My website's rank is going downward.

It's usual for any website to rank high and suddenly drop down..it depends on the quality of backlinks your site receives and the content it has. Often changing Google algorithms are also a factor that determines search engine positions.

Just a tip for achieving better website rankings..check for the on-page factors of your site whether they are search engine friendly. If not, make the needed updates (as they can be done on your own).

Also look for the social media presence of your website. Updating some content regularly might help for sure.

Interesting thread - the Google dance adds "noise" to any attempt to study the effectiveness of ranking strategies, so it's very difficult to assess whether your ranking idea is making any difference or not, except over the very long term. And it's not helped by the fact that almost every rank tracker returns different results in my experience. Ultimately I think you have to choose one method and stick with it, whatever it tells you. But has anyone seen this: my YouTube video ranked TWICE for exactly the same URL and same keyword? (At first I thought it was the difference between http and https URL, but apparently not) And then after undertaking a Google search, and refreshing the page (with no cookies saved) and no clickthroughs, the rank changes again, and again. It's very confusing.
Any ideas about how to cut through the confusion?
