Simple keywords question (SEO)

Hi all

I am about to give CaesarSEO's offer a whirl and therefore need to select two keywords (only).

Now, let's say my niche is selling briefcases. Would it make sense to select:

1) briefcase
2) leather briefcase

Or does it not make sense to select a second keyword containing the first keyword? As in, will ranking well for "briefcase" make you rank well for "leather briefcase"?

Would I therefore be better off (and making more efficient use if the service) choosing, for example:

1) briefcase
2) work bag

I hope this make sense. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

JR

I have reviewed the competition on SEMRush and the best sites rank for both search terms. We manufacture our own product and sell under our own brand name.

I essence, I want to know whether ranking well for "briefcase" will make you rank well for "leather briefcase".

Obviously this wouldn't be an issue if we didn't have to narrow to 2 keywords, but we are fledgling business and so want to get the most bang for our buck out of the $99 per month!

Based on the info you have provided, and assuming you sell briefcases (not of the leather kind), there is no point ranking for leather briefcase if you do not make/sell it.

Today it is very hard to rank for single keywords organically. It takes time and effort to rank for single keywords.

Let us assume that you are selling leather briefcases. Then it is ideal to optimize your site to rank for leather briefcases.

In fact, look for long tail keywords in the leather briefcase niche (as in brand name leather briefcase, leather briefcase accessories etc) and optimize your site to rank for these. It is much easier to rank for these long tail keywords. Over time, with regular updates of quality content, your site will ultimately rank for short tail keywords in the briefcase niche.

THis is the case of an inverted pyramid where your long tail forms the base and your site peaks towards the short tail keywords which form the peak of the pyramid. Start with specific and over time and effort, become relevant to the broad and general terms of your niche.

I never target just the keyword by its self. So if you was to target briefcase then i would go with everything attached to that i.e leather breifcase, business breifcase, cheap breifcase, buy briefcase online etc..

a couple of things to consider . Besides competition and broad term and short term issue ,you also need to consider how you have optimizes and structures your pages. If you want to rank the same page for the both keyword you can use both in building links .

I think nobody can give you correct answer here, and chances are 50-50. If you rank for "briefcase" there are chances that you would rank for "leather briefcase" as well. However its not 100% certain.

Always remember, you should target keywords which are suitable for your webpages and offer good user experience. I mean if you're sharing info related to "briefcase" and "work bag" on same page, then yes you can target both keywords. Ideally you should only target 5 keywords for one webpage.

I would target all 3 of those keywords. Diversity is key to authority.
