If one already submitted the sitemap.xml to Google webmaster tool, is it necessary to add a sitemap.html on the website to improve SEO?

Say what? The website's sitemap should be found at: yourwebsitename.com/sitemap.xml

It does not have an HTML extension. What did you mean by that?

Nop !! Its not mandatory to add Sitemap twice. Only sitemap.xml to Google webmaster tool is enough.

Sitemaps don't have to be XML, and it's not always at website.com/sitemap.xml.

I'm still confused. The sitemap is always there on your website. You can't add it to Webmasters if it's not present in your website first...

There are many ways to add a sitemap to WMT

However, you can add sitemap to WMP after creating sitemap on your site..

So it's not necessary that it's uploaded to your website?

HTML sitemaps can benefit humans + also distribute internal link juice around your pages.

If you are unsure about the different sitemap file types and when to use them, check tthis article:
Sitemap Comparison of Text, HTML, ROR, RSS and XML Sitemaps
(It has both explanation and code examples of all sitemap file types.)

Only Sitemap.xml is required, so there is no need to add sitemap.html

So you're saying the navigation for your visitors isn't important? Or just trying to mess up your competition? According to good old Mr Cutts site navigation for your visitors is a critical algorithm. I don't agree with everything he says, but somethings I do.

You don't need a sitemap. case closed.
If you need a sitemap, your site's structure is terrible.

A sitemap just makes webmasters feel good because it's
on some list of feel-good things to do.

The html sitemap would be for visitors to find what's on your
site. But then, why would they need that either? I can't
remember the last time I clicked on a sitemap. Why bother?
I'm not going scrounging around a site if I can't make heads
      or tails out of it.

You only need a sitemap if a page is buried so deep, that it
cannot be gotten to quickly from the main index page. But then,
creating just one good backlink gets the thing indexed. So, we
revert to top of this post.

If google needs a sitemap to index a page, again, your site is
lame. Google should does not need nor want your help.

But, I know. It makes people feel good. Like using the meta tags
keyword, description, repeatedly pushing the button at the
      crosswalk...

According To Matt Cutts: They (XML and HTML Sitemap) are both yummy. It's like delicious apples and wonderful oranges. We (Google) really, really like them both.

HTML and XML sitemap both have their own use. HTML sitemap is hierarchical structure in which all website links are added in HTML format. Its is for both search engine and user. And XML sitemap is only for search engine. But it is not mandatory to add XML or HTML sitemap in website, it just provide you added advantage in SEO.

I am in online business since 3 years and I know very well about xml sitemap and html sitemaps. First of all I want to say “Microsys” has explained it in proper way.

I want to focus on xml sitemap because it matters a lot if you want to be cached fast and quickly by Google Search engine.

As you know google crawlers converts a webpage into xml after that it starts reading or crawling therefore, if your website already have an xml sitemap then googlebot will easily read content of your website.

The conclusion is that xml sitemap is necessary for each and every website.

Those two statements contradict each other.

Hi scprpion, Yes you can add a html sitemap in your site. There are two sitemaps we used in a website.
    1. xml sitemap. it is used to tell crawler about all the pages in our site.
    2. html sitemap, it is created for user/visitors by which user can easily find all the page of a site.

If you have a normal average site, xml is going to work fine for you, mostly sites with huge number of pages prefer html sitemap over xml.

.XML and HTML sitemap are different to each other. You cant compare, both sitemaps have their own importance. .XML sitemap usually used for Google's spiders and HTML sitemap is helpful of users.
