I am hoping only someone with extensive SEO knowledge will attempt to respond, Thank you.

Question 1: I used to have a homepage that is ranking number one for KW1 (two words combi) on Google.com and other english language countries' Google. But after Penguin and Panda, the homepage is no where to be found on Google's SERPs for this KW, instead, a subpage, which is not targetting for KW1, managed to be ranked 85 on Google.com ----- So what does this means?

Question 2 which is similar to Question 1: I used to have a subpage that is ranking number 3-5 for KW2 (three words combi) on Google.com and other english language countries' Google. But after Penguin and Panda, that subpage is no where to be found on Google's SERPs for this KW, instead, another subpage, which is not targetting for KW2, managed to be ranked 50 on Google.com ----- So what does this means?

Question 3: I used to have a subpage that is ranking number 3-6 for KW3 (four words combi) on Google.com and other english language countries' Google. But after Penguin and Panda, that subpage is no where to be found on Google's SERPs for this KW, instead, the homepage, which is not targetting for KW3, managed to be ranked 33 on Google.com ----- So what does this means?

I am still trying to figure out how to revive the rankings for the correct pages, so any substantial help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Moneymakingguru,

We may have a hard time answering your questions. I am sure that you will get some very good answers however you may have trouble applying them to your situation because we have no idea about any of the activities that you have been doing that got you to the spot you are in now.

Its almost as if you were saying “I have a plant and it died, why did it die?” Someone could rattle off the thousands of different possibilities spanning disease to improper care that could have killed your plant and never really touch on the true cause. Conversely, if you came right out and said, “I kept my plant in a dark closet and it died, why did it die?”, someone could easily give you an answer to that.

Penguin is an algorithmic penalty applied to sites that were involved in widespread keyword stuffing and link schemes. Were you involved in those activities? If so, that is probably part of your problem. If not, you were not affected by this algorithm change.

Panda was designed to combat poor quality sites. Specifically those sites with on-page issues, scraped or spun content, thin content, and other similar content issues. If you have sites that fit this description, this could be your problem. If you were making good content that was rich and designed for users, you probably were not affected by Panda.

Here is more detailed information on Panda,

Official Blog: Finding more high-quality sites in search

Here is detailed info on Penguin,

Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Another step to reward high-quality sites

If you were involved in whole or in part with any of the tactics or themes mentioned in these descriptions of algorithm updates, I would venture a guess that this is why you are having issues. If you were not, perhaps there were other things that you were doing that caused the drop in rankings?

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

      Hi Shawn,

      Cool reply. Thanks.

      Details of what I did.

I optimised "heavily" onpage using 2005-2009 SEO recommendations...
      i) KW in domain,
      ii) 1-2% KW density
iii) hyperlink text, used 50% the KW, exact, phrase and broad match.
iv) all the meta tags, title, desc, kws, H1, image alt, etc..

I got backlinks from very well established web 2.0 properties, youtube, tumblr, typepad, and a top authority niche site.

I did article marketing for it using Article Samurai. I did use articles that were already on my site for many months and spun them into unique articles (30-40% unique).

It is built on Wordpress, to function like a website more than a blog. And my last post was in April 2012.

IT works very very well up until Panda, and then Penguin made it really disappeared from SERPs of many of our KWs..

So Shawn, what do you think is the problem then? Shawn, do you help people get out of Penguin/Panda, and get their previous rankings back?

PS: I also have a dozen other sites which is in a similar position, and the SEO methods were very similar really.

      Many thanks...

Looks like a Penguin penalty to me.

Considering that it's been a year since Penguin and you still haven't recovered, it's definitely not a Google Dance.

And although you didn't note your anchor text use -- based on the links you're building and on-page -- I'd venture to guess it's overoptimzed. Edit: you said it was 50%. That's overtopimized.

I'd hate to be the bearer of bad news but you have two options:

        1. Start over with a new site. Build legit, high quality links this time (not scribd and web 2.0s)
        2. Remove most of the links you've build to this site/de-optimize your on-page stuff

        Hope that helps.

If your home page disappeared and your inner pages are ranking then it means that you may have built too many links to your home page, you have to build links to inner pages too..
