What Makes a good Authority site?

I have been wondering for some time now.
Does it have to be single subject driven or can they have multiple subjects.
I thought they were just portal pages with articles on them.

Some examples of good sites would be helpful.

Cheers

    Hello Kiwi,

It all depends on what you are looking for,

For example if you are a dentist, and you have a blog, with some related categories, the majority of your posts are dentist related, and you've set yourself (including your credentials) as the author.
(Wordpress blogs are great for this, since you can set up the authors there)

Then after 3-6 months of regular updates (at least 2 per week), Then Google will see your site as an authority site and start ranking you higher for dentist related keywords.

Also please check LSIkeywords.com to get a list of the related keywords on your niche and be sure to include some of those on your articles.

And of course good quality backlinks will help as well.
A great way to build authority very quick is to interview the top bloggers on your niche, and post the interviews on your site. That stuff often gets viral, plus you have the chance to build relationships with top bloggers, and they may link to your site.

    Good luck!

An authority site,is basically an aged website, with lots of quality content and backlinks.
Actually,it's a lot more then that, but you can take that for begining

I think good authority sites is like wikipedia.
That website rank any kind of topic in every niche.
The inner page rank in many keyword.
That is the extreme example of authority site.
for single subject authority site example is like techcrunch.

Traffic will let you know when your site is an authority, they'll be searching the branded domain name (not keyword stuffed EMD).

    Look at your incoming searches.

In my words if your site is old + good backlink profile + faced approx. all updates of Big G without any issue after this...

if you are still ranking for most of main keywords + industry related LSI keyword thats what i think is called authority site... The best thing i have seen is Authority site if even add a new article/page that start ranking for its LSI keywords next day after indexed

Just my 2 cents on Authority Site's words...
