It's all about the links. I've been testing videos quite a bit in 2013 and I am outranking the competition which have more likes, views, subs etc etc.

You can rank top #10 with just on-page SEO with low/medium KWs but not the top spot in my experience.

Same experience here. In the Google results I've got plenty of videos outranking others that have more views, likes, etc. (While the opposite seems to be more common on YouTube itself.)

    Make sure your keywords are:

1 - In the video filename itself.
    2 - In the title.
    3 - In the description.

Other than that, send backlinks to it as you would any other page. Don't worry too much about likes, comments, etc. Though I've found that Google tends to rank the most "properly optimized" video in the top 3-5 YOUTUBE results.

Like jsprojects said make sure the video is well optimized first. There was a case study on here recently by thetruth2011 and he put something like "OMG" before his keyword. Don't do that. Put the keyword first then sell the video after for the clicks.

As far as whats most important, in order of importance, I would say -

    1) Video optimization
    2) Backlinks
    3) Social proof, subscribers, likes, etc.

Also, this has been said before, but you have to mimic a viral campaign for it to work properly. As your views/likes/subscribers are coming in, you need to continually be backlinking the video. Then its just a matter of consistency after that point. Keep pushing untill the videos in spot 1.

I ran a random test recently. I ranked a video in YouTube that immediately took the first spot.

Please understand that when I started this project a month ago, I had NO CLUE what I was doing. I ordered some RSS feed gig, and "a crap ton" of backlinks gig on Fiver.

The video made it to the second page in Google for that phrase, then vanished, but is firmly in the #1 spot in YouTube. The things I did were...
      1. Named the video after the keyword
      2. The name of the account, matched the name of the keyword.
      3. The title of the video matched the name of the keyword.
      4. I tagged the hell out of it.
      5. Included my keyword phrase a dozen or so times in my description.

The video shot to the #1 spot at that time with only 4 views.

Also, I checked today, and it turns out that back-linking service was a joke because I literally have 1 backlink according to OSE...

You can have 100,000,000 views and your video could NOT have a high ranking and 10,000 but be on 1st place... It all depends on the backlinks to your video and especially their QUALITY! The views, likes and comments could be "hacked" by bots, programs, etc.
