Just wondering what the value of backlinks are coming from sites like these. I realize they are not niche-specific, but they do seem to have solid PR. I'm assuming it must be better than using hubpages and squidoo?

Not sure about alternet but all Examiner OBLs are nofollow.

There are a lot more factors, but PR is sometime a good authority indicator.
You should also be looking at niche specific backlinks comming from trusted sources, this will be even more powerfull

Even if you do find a major authority site where comment post are dofollow, doesn’t mean it will pass any pagerank or benefit. If I’m not mistaken TheDailyBeast comment post are dofollow but you won’t see ANY benefit from a link coming from the comment area. Even if its coming from a PR7 page with zero OBL's.
