i have a friend with a forum that he's willing to pass some of his link juice onto me with a dofollow link in a topic. which would be better, creating an ordinary topic with the link in it, that'll eventually become dead and buried within the forum, or a sticky that will occasionally be updated with replies and stay on the 1st page of the subforum?

Go with the link that updates on the homepage from time to time. Use your domain name or brand name as your anchor text if the forum has nothing to do with your niche.

Definetly keep it sticky and see if you can get your friend to give you another link with different context that does get buried so you get the best of both worlds.

You may have to ping the buried one every now and then and/or have a web 2.0 link back to the buried post easiest from twitter or facebook
