Hi All,

been doing some keyword research and wondered if there was a huge difference between EMD and "Phrase" when thinking of buying a domain name?

I know that in an ideal situation you would want EMD with low competition with over 1000 local searches, but what are your thoughts on the following scenario.....

EMD - low competition but under 1000 local searches
"Phrase" - also low but local searches well over 1000

Is it still worth buying a domain that includes the EMD keywords based on the number of "phrase" searches or is the EMD the real benchmark?

I know that "broad" match is no real use when ranking but I wondered if I'm missing out on some possible good domains to rank for by discounting the "phrase" match stats and only looking at the low competition EMD stats that are over 1000.

Also the "medium" competition stats open up more possibilities but didn't know how much harder these were to rank against low competition keywords?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Andy

My understanding is that google took away any advantage to an emd in their updates last year.
So it won't help or hurt to have an emd for your domain.

Since then I have been trying to create brand able domains.

You can still rank EMDs however G is targeting sites with crappy link profiles and rubbish content. Generally speaking, these sites tend to be EMDs which is why it's under the spotlight.

That's about says it all. EMD's still rank. And they always will. Because in most cases, they are associated with a brand that people are searching for. Where people get in trouble is their link profiles and manipulating the SERPS with low quality, self made links.

I wrote something about this here, although it is from a local search perspective.

What about "phrase" based domains though? Worse, better or same as ranking an EMD?

I plan to have high quality content/links to get over your comments above but am still unsure of the ranking differences between a phrase based domain and trying to dig deeper and find a low competition EMD that still has commercial prospects.

I don't see why it should make any difference. I certainly haven't seen any evidence to state otherwise.

I've been asking the same question and have done tests on several websites that I own.

Based on my testing, an EMD with quality backlinks and with good content should rank higher. I still have several EMD and they are ranking on top 3 pages of google.

I don't do EMD, i'll try to phrase match long tails with my subdomains.

It's still not too hard to rank a site without EMD, althought it does seem to be a little faster if you do have the exact match.

I don't have much experience with phrase match, but judging from the serps, it works.

AS long as the main keyword is in the domain name it would get benefit... try to use on top extensions like .com, .net, .org etc.. they would be helpful.. of course quality content.

EMD's still rank the same way it did before to be honest. I build a lot of micro niche sites and I still see the boost in EMD's. Google is mainly after over optimization in terms of on site. Just don't mention the keyword too many times and have a good backlink profile.

Here is an example: Best Adjustable Dumbbells: The Ultimate Dumbbells Comparison Chart.

It's an EMD, but it's waiting to get slapped soon because it is over optimized, the keyword is mentioned too many times in the articles.

PS: that is not my website.
