How to keep my content fresh & ranked high?

So apparently, getting a top rank on Google is only half the job, staying there is even harder.
Google has got the modern illness of preferring the young & fresh over the elderly/veteran content.
I'm talking about content that is still highly relevant and valuable to readers. However new content on this topic gets pushed to top results quite fast.
So how do you keep yourself on top? How do I make certain posts look young and relevant to Google? Building links? updating the content with current dates?
Looking for experienced suggestions.
Thanks!

Update: thanks for the replies, I want to point out that my question refers not to an entire site but rather to certain posts/keywords that I rank high and then there's the Google dance pushing young ( not necessarily authority) content upwards.

Add fresh content as often as possible, send your updates to G+, Facebook pages, Twitter and of course your list subscribers. Just make it as live as possible. That's what not only Google likes.

The only way in this era of online marketing is to keep pumping in new and fresh contents to a website and make the site an authority in the eyes of Google.

Thanks, I want to point out that my question refers not to an entire site but let's say to a certain post/keywords that I rank high and then there's the Google dance pushing young content upwards.

Use Google Alerts to monitor primary keywords and phrases
and use relevant content from those alerts to kickstart ideas
    for your fresh content.

Pay particular attention to relevant Google news items on topics
that you can reference in your own content.

Post high quality content written specifically for your perfect
reader... that one person who is most representative of your
target market. Content that people will share with others.

Promote your new content in all those social channels. Besides Google+, Facebook, Twitter; feed into social bookmarking sites of high PR, like Stumbleupon, Delicious. You can also focus in Pinterest. Always try to keep fresh content in your site, must not be duplicated and must keep on regular updating content on regular basis if you are maintaining a blog site. Provide quality content so that it is liked by people and gradually your content get shared among other members too. Also focus on RSS feed submission.

Continue on adding high quality content to your site and update often. Make sure your site is easy to navigate for better user experience for increased traffic. Acquire links from high authority domains like article directory, web 2.0s (contextual links, mix of dofollow and nofollow), HPBL, blogposts, wiki, social bookmarks, press release, etc. Build links gradually and continue building to keep the link velocity.

sorry guys, but Google doesn't care about your quality content. They just dont.

Your quality content does nothing for your ranking at all, but what it does do is cause your readers to share your stuff, come back for more, link to your site, etc.

That's what Google cares about...not your bazillion word "quality" articles you pump out everyday....Google simply doesnt care.

EDIT: forgot to answer your other question, the way you stay ranked high is with high PR backlinks. I have tons and tons of sites I never ever touch and they stay ranked because of the powerful backlinks I have.
