Market Samurai or Long Tail Pro?

A quick note RE your "slow" complaint. I believe slower turnabout time (compared to online tools) is a common issue with the majority of desktop software, like market samurai or seo powersuite.

Yet, it's the "price" you pay for data richness. What to have all important SEO metrics at hand? Have some patience for your desktop software to address multiple data centers. In any case, you'll hardly find that much data in online seo tools. Webmeup is perhaps the only online provider that is close to desktop providers in terms of data volumes, but that's clearly an exception.

I don't have much info regarding Long Tail Pro but based on what I've read, both have pros and cons. It's just a matter of consumer preference. They usually compare the two as Market Samurai - older but proven to last this long versus Long Tail Pro - newer but no idea yet if they will last long. Many people feel safe with Market Samurai even if it's slower because they have been using it for a long time now.

I have used many keyword tools they all do the same sort of job, but it really depends what you are researching for eg seo, pay per click

I've used both Market Samurai and Long Tail Pro and I prefer LTP!

Market Samurai is maybe the best software according to me for SEO. It gives you all the info you need. Personally, I didn't use LTP, but if this is working perfect for me, you should be also happy after using it!

Market Samurai is beyond garbage. Used it for a company that I was interning for. Results took 298352389539285 hours. I just use Google Keyword Tool, SEO Quake, and Majestic SEO. Done deal.

Well, I haven't used long tail pro but what I would say about Market Samurai that it is good if you need in larger amount, if you are working alone then you don't need any tool for keyword research, instead Google Adwords,it is enough and Market Samurai is based on Google Adwords keyword tool.

A lot of this depends on how you actually do your keyword research. I honestly haven't found a great resource on how to whittle down a list of 4,800 words.

Speed - about the same. If you run your terms individually in Google Adwords, versus a batch of 5 with LTP - cumulatively they are about the same.

Bugginess - Google never seems to fail me, but i've had to close out of LTP before.

Flexibility - LTP gives you flexibility on the search, where as using the Google Tool, you have to download the CSV, and open in Excel, and then sort and filter. A little bit of a time saving.

In terms of CPC - LTP can be wrong, really wrong. Sometimes it's readily apparent, like a 7 word key word phrase that's making +$20 per click. But you can't ever be sure.

And in both cases, the GAKT and LTP - they give you a CPC that's *not* the same as the suggested bid which is on the Contextual Targeting Tool - a different tab under GAKT. It's weird to me that Spencer doesn't have this, cause I heard about it on his podcast with Hayden.

Honestly, I don't think these things are what sells LTP. The real advantage to LTP is the competition analyzer.

You can whittle down a big hunk of keywords with CPC, traffic amount, advertiser comp - pretty easily. But once you've gotten 4,000 down to 40 - you need to check that first page of competition.

LTP puts all of that stuff in one place, where you'd have to go to a bunch of sites to gather up all of the information.

And once you start looking for a keyword seriously, you'll see the value in getting LTP Platinum to whittle your search down faster.

Some parts of Keyword Research are very rote, and it's nice to have a tool to automate those.

As for the cost, if you can't fork out a 100 bucks for standalone tool, I don't know what to tell you. I'd just do the keyword research cheap man style, one word searches in GAKT, dl the csv, and then use # of words as a proxy for competitiveness.

I use both, longtail Pro because it's much faster at finding keywords and you can use multiple seed keywords, and then i use market samurai for competition.

They both work good together.

I am using Market Samurai but same with other users. I have the same feedback. It is very slow. And I am sad about it, before, I really think that it was my computer but no.. it is the software itself.

I am Getting in touch with the developer support team. I hope they could help.

EDIT: Turns out, they are having issues connecting to google adwords because of the google keyword tool planner. For those who have not upgraded their copy yet, it is time.

EDIT 2: Upgrading will take you zillion of hours too.. So there. :p

I used MS years ago when it was the only option. It was and still is painfully slow and crashes about 50% of the time just analyzing 1000 keywords at a time (1000 is about the max it can do at a time). I contacted them about this issue years ago and it remains an issue today. I do use it on occasion and I see my MS still gets updates every few weeks.

However it clearly is in 'beta' development because it is slow and buggy. It has essentially not changed for years and to me this is unacceptable, bordering on ridiculous. I will still use it for some small scale analysis but am currently looking into either Longtail Pro or Ultimate Niche Finder for a number of large scale analysis that I need to do.

In short, MS is a 3+ year old program that is still in Beta and was useful 3+ years ago but today, there's much better options.

As speed wise Long Tail Pro is faster than Market Samurai. Other advantage with LTP is that you can generate multiple seed keywords at once.

I have used both extensively and there is no comparison.

Long Tail Pro is WAY better in my opinion.

Market Samurai was by far the industry leader when it came to keyword research tools. For a couple of years there, it was easily the best. But, Long Tail Pro is far better, in my opinion. Especially for beginners. I think that so many people were so happy with Market Samurai for the longest time that they don't want to bash them or talk bad about them. Market Samurai still is a great tool (I guess), but it is so slow. I've been using Long Tail Pro (platinum version) for several months now - and I love it!

Yea, I started out with Market Samurai and it's very slow. I'm trying to download Long Tail Pro but it says it's not working at the moment. Anybody else get this message?
