Can anyone help me?
I have a really high bounce rate 70-80% people are staying on my site for an average of 3-5 minutes so they must be reading it just that they find it in search and read the post and then leave.
Anyone know good strategies to keep people on my site?
It is powered by wordpress. Maybe there is some plugin that could help?

Make sure at the bottom of each article you give them somewhere to go.
Related article links or just one link to the next article you want them to look at, this will funnel them through your site and the will end up where you want them to be.

That should help your bounce rate alot

It would be good to work on the site navigation, so that visitors can have a better idea of the content you provide. My suggestion is to focus on a specific group of users and adapt content to their needs. Quality content is the most important for visitors no matter what.

below 40 % considered as a good bounce rate. You need to put some interesting factors into your webpage. The page content should be of high quality so reader can involve in reading without leaving the page.

It always better to have another related post at the bottom of the posts for people to navigate through will certainly help to make them to stay back. If possible include the sliders in the home page that certainly attracts people.

      Hi Guys,

Tho this is my first post, I have just come into this stuff and am keen to get more of a handle on such affiliate kind of marketing techniques. I do however come from a Developer / SEO / PPC background so I will help out as much as I can while starting up!

So a few tips that I have considered from your site,
      • Remove that first host gator ad from the left sidebar, its distracting and takes away the focus of your page (kind of disables the initial intent of the page)
      • Since that is your home page, I would agree with jaisonjohn in the fact that the slider is a good point. Your homepage should be the launch pad of the rest of the site/internal pages. Make it easy to come into and then lead users to your blog posts (featured post/latest post etc)
      • While the theme is fairly complete, the main header image area - is just a blank space, you could use that for something else like a tag line or your sitename with a little snippet of info of the sites content
      • This will allow more content to be visible above the fold (dont forget people that have smaller screens than what you might have). If smaller screens load the page all they might see is that red space and one line of text.
      • I guess that the main tip following on (combining all points above) is to allow people to start reading your content, once they get the feel for your site - and its quality content as mentioned by roneidaselva, this is when you should present your banner ads (not always - in some cases eg. deeper pages you could start playing with their locations, but with new landing pages, and specifically your homepage, make it as trustworthy as possible)

Hope that makes sense. If you want me to clarify anything let me know.

  • thanks for your advice.
I will start putting links at the bottom of the posts to another page on the site.

Here are the reasons I would instantly bounce from your home page:

    1) It looks like a wedding site, not a technical site. The flowery design belongs on a wedding card, not a high-tech website. One look and I would be gone.

    2) The first thing I see is a post about somebody's problem with yahoo[sic]. I could care less. There is nothing to tell me what the site is about, what I can find on the site, and why I should stay and browse a little. No welcome message. No statement of purpose. It just starts with an arbitrary post.

    3) That same post has in humongous font size "Your browser settings..." Why can't you clamp a lid on such out-of-place and distracting font sizes that do not belong in anybody's posts?

    4) Your navigation is unclear. At the very top you have "Projects", "Resources". Projects is about you, and resources opens to another blog page where in order to find anything of interest a visitor has to scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll and then scroll more. This is not one bit visitor-friendly.

I could go on, but the simple truth is that because your website is just a blog, it is very hard for people to find things they may be interested in. So, they leave.

Properly used, a blog page is all about one topic. People can go from one intersting post about that topic to the next one, and there is a high probability each post will interest them. On your blog, the topics have such a wide scope that there is little probability any post will interest them. For example, the first post under "Electronics", which covers everything from iPods to microwave ovens, is "Lasers". Why would I care about that?

Your blog lacks a clear focus. It tries to cover way too much. That's why people bounce.

Bounce rate is right up there with site speed as the most
      idiotic things webmasters worry about.

Concentrate on stuff that actually matters. If people did this first,
the other stuff would be moot.

To a degree I agree with this. As long as your design is good and you present the options you want to present to visitors - why obsess about bounce?

When I surf I bounce quick. I don't sit around reading 'related posts' and neither do most people. You're better off capturing that visitor as a lead rather than worrying about them reading more pages.

Very disturbing theme for a tech / computer info site. Doesn't match with the niche at all. Would be a better fit for some fashion or design site I suppose.

Then I get to see some stupid random articles.

You're better of with a more professional design and a static homepage.

This site screams click back button in browser all over. I really hate it and I don't say that often about sites.

That theme header is brutal on the eyes.

The site content isn't focused on a single subject & the category I looked at (Electronics - How to make high powered laser) has a single page of content which doesn't give traffic searching for how to make a laser anyplace on your site to go when they're finished reading that single laser page. Your actually sending traffic away from your site to Youtube instead of embedding the Youtube Iframe video in your page & keeping traffic on your own domain. Once you send traffic to Youtube they're gone... they'll wander off watching other videos.

100% of external links should always open in a new browser window/tab, that keeps your web page open in the traffics browser & makes it easier for them to keep browsing/converting on your own domain.

I can't find a reference to it now but I recently read a report by Google that determined the two biggest factors for design were:

      1) Simplicity
      2) A site that is similar in design to what others in the niche use.

I know I've been bad about using design that was already used. I switched a few sites over to more standard designs in the past few weeks and user metrics improved a lot.

First of all use instinctive navigation for significant items. Create best design for your website. Poor design increasingly less acceptable. Your design is more attractive and always split us very large post.

Be mindful of your ad placement. Some visitors can accidentally click an advertising that is too close to your website navigation. This forces the visitors to leave your site. Also, the theme seemed not that related to your topic. Try a theme that looks more techie. To lower your site’s bounce rate, aside from the relevant and interesting content, other factors that can contribute for organic traffic are the design of the page, fast loadable site, etc.

    Well,

You definetly have to keep your visitors interested...

Such as: "CLICK HERE for more info!" Or something catchy along those lines. YOu have to keep giving out information to keep them their on your page, but my best advice would be to give them another page to visit that they can click on and recievce more info about whatever you are selling...

    Then make money! lol

I don't have to worry about that too much becuase of my autoresponders and capture page and such...

One thing that you can try and IMO will be quite effective is providing the related posts link (internal links only) throughout the body of the contents as well at the bottom of the post.

I suggest you change your theme. It seems too distracting. Also organize it better by adding recent posts, top posts categories on the sidebar. Make it easier for your readers to find what they are looking for. Also, find out where your traffic exits, if they click on your ads then good for you but if they click back then then are not happy with your site.

If your site development budget is..... zero..... then stick with Wordpress! There are more high quality free and low cost resources for WP than you can imagine.

So combine your learning about site design, with just a little learning about Wordpress, and you'll be on the right track.

        Good luck!

Bounce rate is calculate by avg visiting time on website. If avg time is 6 mins and people are staying 1 or 2 min only than bounce rate will be high. So you can place interesting video on your website. Other interesting or amazing pictures as well.
