It is my understanding that if you have a keyword that, when typed into google, returns no ads along the side, that it is a keyword that A) is low competition and B) There's no money in it. IF that's true, would doing an ad for that keyword pretty much put me in front of any person searching that term regardless of the fact that nothing is listed along the side when it's typed in currently? I hope that makes sense.

As for the "ad"itude I couldn't think of anything else Thanks for any input

Off the top off my head, I'd say probably not. The words are of such low
level or other such parameter, that google has decided not to allow
    ads for it.

"Off the top of my head," because I cannot think of one keyword/phrase
that would exist that people are not bidding on if possble.

Another thing, because you would be #1, I would also say that your
QS would need to be very, very high as well. So, you probably would
not be able to bid on it and show up even if it was opened up.

Interesting and bummer at the same time if that's true.

QS? not sure what that is.

From a keyword standpoint, I am in the medical professional and am gearing a site towards educating premeds and med students. So words like MCAT and premed for some reason, at least on my computer, bring up no adds, but would be my target audience. Any thoughts? Other keywords? Get out while I still can before I spend a TON of time creating something I can't get into their hands? Thanks for the input.

    Yes, you'd be #1.

But #1 will probably be on the sidebar as your CTR -- and therefore QS -- would be awful.

QS = Quality Score (0-10) - a measure that Google uses to determine your landing page's quality and relevance to the keyword you're bidding on. The higher your quality score, the lower your CPC will be in return.

Got it. I always heard Page Rank. Same?

        I'll be polite....that's rare!

Anyway, if you don't know what QS is, then you have a whole
lot to learn about adwords. Quality score is given to keywords,
ads, etc. that show some sort of numerical value as to how well
        they do.

Google does not just toss up an add because someone bids higher.
If your QS is high enough, you actually pay less to be #1. If your
QS is low enough, you can bid as high as you want, and still
not be able to get #1.

So, if there are no ads, as I stated, either nobody is bidding, or
it's such a low level word that google is not allowing ads on it.

There are many searches that google will not place ads on.

No matter how high you bid, they will not allow you to be on
there. And, as I also stated, if your QS is low, you won't be the
only ad on the page in the first place. You would be shut out,
even though you are the highest bidder.

Reiterating, I cannot even think of a keyword that google allows
and nobody is bidding. So chances are if there are no ads, then
google is just not doing ads for that.

On a side note, I always plug in a propsed keyword for my adsense
sites just to see the comp for placement. No ads, I toss the word.

It might be more prudent to find terms that have very few ads.

Paul, I appreciate your detailed explanation and the restraint you used To this point I have spent all my time building the site and looking into keywords and not so much the Adsense part of it until now. I read about Page Rank and never Quality Score, I know I have a ton to learn. Of course this morning when I googled quality score I was greeted with a whole host of new things I have to consider. As if building the site, getting the content, finding an audience, finding a keyword, ranking on google, building a list, wasn't enough Thanks for the input.
