SEO Company - Performance Query

Hi all,

We've got an SEO company working for us at the moment and, before, we were doing quite well with our main keyword.

Back in February we did a large overhaul of our website and after dealing with our account handler, all the changes we made were okay in terms of SEO.

Since then however our position for this keyword has plummeted. It's only 5 or 6 weeks ago someone else from said company has come back to us and said we need to add new copy to the site. Bit of an ache...

The copy has been implemented and we're bouncing all over the SERPs. One day we're at the top of page two, a few days later we're middle of page three. They say this is normal as Google "figures out what our site is about".

Considering we were in the second position before it seems bizarre that our rank is doing this. I just wanted to see if this was normal behavior? Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Cheers,

- Tom

There could be a multitude of reasons why your site is bouncing around.

It could be the change in copy, the work the SEO company is doing, or even an algorithm change.

There have been some rumblings in the Google algorithm over the past couple of weeks that may have affected your site.

There was also a panda update not too long ago as well.

Without more information it would be hard to pinpoint exactly why you are experiencing these fluctuations, however just understand that it could be from numerous reasons.

  • Whatl,

The bouncing around is familiar but it typically only happens with brand new sites and not ones already established like yours. As mentioned by Gyuman, there are so many factors with SEO. Without knowing what was done before and what the SEO company did, its hard to say what exactly is causing your site’s issues. You mentioned a huge drop in rankings, did the company change your URL’s at all?

    Best,

    Shawn

I've seen sites drop from page 1 to page 4 just by changing a Wordpress theme. Did they do 301 redirects from the old page urls to the new page urls?

There are so many factors that could cause the change it's hard to give a simple answer.

    Whatl,

That could happen for a whole host of reasons. But I would guess that this is mainly because of the link profile of your site.
For example, if you have a mix of backlinks like this:

    PR 6 - 2
    PR 5 - 3
    PR 4 - 5
    PR 3 - 8
    PR 2 - 13
    PR 1 - 25
    PR 0 - 40
    PR n/a - 45

The "good" PR sites are higher up the chain. If after a few days, 1-2 backlink(s) from the PR 6 site disappears, that will affect your link profile and Google will say "Hey I guess their site isn't as relevant for this keyword" and you will drop.
Then the next few days go by & you gain another few PR 6's, Google will reassess your link profile and determine that you're more relevant but still not as relevant as before and only bump you up half way to where you were before.

There there's also the anchor text saturation with the keywords you're targeting with those backlinks.

Let's be honest, Google doesn't care what the content on your site is, people do! So when you're ranked on the first SERP & your site's pages are "relevant" to the search term, if it sucks, people will bounce off the site in no time. And that also affects your rankings.

I could go on & on with suggestions of what to check BUT I would say numero uno is your link profile. I hope I am not messing with your SEOs credibility by doing this but you can put in your site's URL here:

You'll be able to see what types of backlinks you're getting to your site. This will help to determine a little bit why your rankings are so volatile.

    Hope this helps!

Can you tell us how old your website is? This might be Google dance, but without knowing its age we cannot be assured.
