Non-www and www version of site indexed problem

Hi,

I just started working on a site with the non-www and www problem:

Non-www version:1460 indexed pages
www version: 282

I'm going to redirect one version to the other through .htaccess and set a preferred domain in Google Webmasters Tools. I thought the non-www version of the site was the way to go, since it has many more indexed pages.

But, for all main keywords queries in Google, the www version always shows up. So I'm afraid I lose these ranking if I choose the non-www version.

Any suggestions?

Thank you

I always go with the one with the best links.

Well, they bought some quality links for the www version, but... I don't understand why there are just a few indexed pages :-/

I just noticed that we're loosing positions in the SERPs. I guess the change has affected our rankings, since now the non-www version shows up instead of the www. Any advice?

    Thanks
