My first post.

Cant quite hammer down the answer from my research online so I came here. Please help if you can and thank you in advance.

Have had a web business for 8 years. Been operating on a very old drupal cms. Ranked moderately well for lower tier keywords that are pretty specific in my industry. Finally saw the light and studied SEO on my own, just migrated all content to Wordpress, optimized each page for the "Mid level" to "Lower Tier" (more specific terms) related to my industry. (approximately 40 product pages)...each named by their own two keyword phrase which happens to work as a "product keyword" can easily be the name of the product on my site...so great... I now have 40 products with 40 researched individual keyword phrases as their product names.

Now I am at a crossroads with the homepage. To make more user friendly... my menu has 5 main categories I have not ever reached for as keywords, I do want to increase my traffic hopefully with these terms...these do have very high traffic (within my niche industry), but are a little more vague...the homepage content is written for the mid and lower tier products on the site. I have about 25 links for these lower tier products linking to product pages and categories within the site etc.

My question...because this is my bread and butter and we will be transferring over DNS next week. How would you direct the homepage. Should the Title include the 1st tier menu items which scares me to think if I dont rank well for these I may lose a bunch of traffic? Or because they are over reaching they may not be particular enough.

Do I play it safe and optimize the home page for multiple mid and lower tiered terms I am more likely to get/keep?...and am I crazy to try to insert multiple keyword phrases on my homepage? Or, am I over thinking this too much and because all the rest of the sites pages are very well optimized for each of their search terms I should consider the homepage something that is less necessary to implement the keywords and just play it like a simple greeting page.

Thank you again for any suggestions or attention you provide to my matter. I will gladly respond to any question you may have for me to help..,

  • Zammone,

You pretty much answered your own question in the last paragraph. In the eyes of a search engine (and all else being equal) your home page is just like any other page on the site. If you have all of your keywords targeted, there really is to reason to worry about ranking the home page. Some people like to rank it for an EMD because that is the domain and others may like to rank it for a flagship product but in your scenario, it doesn’t really matter because you have no other keywords to rank right?
