    They will help.

Just make sure the anchor text is the keyword you are targeting. (exactly in the language you are targeting)

Nobody, including the guys above will really know the answer. I'd err on the side of caution and would prefer local country backlinks referring to my website. A few here and there from other countries won't matter, but you'll get more relevance in your SERPS from local 'votes'. If that isn't the case I'll eat my surströmming.

Actually, I happen to know the answer. It's YES.

Currently, I'm ranking one portugeese site pretty high (most of the keywords in the top 5) with links that come from English only websites hosted in the US. The only thing that's portuguese is the anchor text of the links.

I'm ranking it locally in Brazilian Google.

Would recommend to take links from relevant and local sites only as you are targeting local market. You can take links from (try to get them locally):

    Quality Guest Posts
    Citations
    Microsites
    Social links

It works fine for me. Maybe it depends on the country and how much competition there is. Even low quality links help for sites in less known languages. Sometimes it only takes a $5 fiverr gig to get a site on first page. I believe it's because there is not much SEO going around. I have even tested with an empty site that only has a banner and an affiliate link and it ranks fine.

How about some FREE unique handwritten articles for your website, blog, SEO, guest posts, etc?

      Thank you all.
What I am catious about is the diversity. Having to many links from English content seems unnatural to me since our content is in Swedish. However since Sweden is a fairly small country in SEO terms the competition is low and some High PR links from globally known web 2.0 sites and "offical" hubs such as wordpress.com or hubpages wouldnt hurt. However adding the site into thousands of directories, getting links from English articles etc. seems weird..

But... I have seen some examples where Japaneese links have highly contributed to #1 placement in Swedish serps.

When it comes to SEO for clients I like to play it safe. Since I only work with native English speakers, I build/buy backlinks from English sources. I like to keep links relevant and I can see that Google will weigh heavy on this post Penguin 2.0 onwards.

Most of the time I don't really need to backlink because my clients already use aged domains so I just need to focus with on-page SEO.

Niche related to the area of your business obviously have a stronger impact on your rankings, but that isn't necessarily a reason to give up on link resources from other areas. Every website that can provide you with a relevant, powerful, non-spammy link is in the end important.

Of course they help, but they are NOT so poweful as local backlinks... But some HIGH authority backlinks from popular websites would help you a lot (do NOT use only local websites to work on your SEO!)

It all depends on how much you value relevant links. At the end of the day backlinks are backlinks but if you had the choice of local citations then you would choose them every time. That's my opinion.

Here is what happened to me when I was doing SEO for a Finnish website, for a Finnish keyword:
        - Using only English related websites, but with the keyword into the link, within 3-4 weeks the website ranked 4th place on google.fi
        - The competition wasn't too strong, so keep this in mind, too
        - Another important aspect is that the comments were done in English and used the keyword as some sort of signature

I am now working on a different SEO campaign, with English keyword, medium competition and also targeting google.fi ranking. Right now it is too soon to say any results, because I just started.
