Was wondering what was your first backlink you ever made/created?

If I remember correctly, then I was making forum profile signatures on no-follow forums with my exact anchor text. I made like 60 of them (manually) and I almost jizzed in my pants because I thought backlinking is so easy and ranking sites are piece of cake.

I remember manually searching for golf keywords (I had a golf tips site) and simply requesting link exchanges with some of the sites that were on page 1. I figured they must be doing something right, so it would be good to have my link on their sites.

Surprisingly this worked pretty well back in the day.

I can remember back when I had a fan site going, not even for profit, just because I wanted one.

All of the most popular websites were joined together in a network of fan sites, and we all had a section on our layouts where we put our buttons. Usually in gif format.

    It was fun

However recently the nostalgia caught up to me and I tried to go back and find all those websites.

    ghost town.

I'm pretty sure my first backlink was on Usenet - and before anyone says that doesn't count for PageRank, it's OK - PageRank hadn't been invented yet.

This space will be awarded to the first WSO owner who can prove they make Million$ from their methods.

My first (cough) was the largest same niche forum, I didn't have a clue about SEO at the time (wouldn't have cared anyways). I was trying to get the forum traffic over to my first site. All I was thinking for the first few months was, d@mn this is easy, ha, ha. I already had the traffics attention for a few months on the forum before I built the site so I guess that's what made the links work so good.

LOL I remember going through a list of 600 directories manually submitting my site. That took some time....I wish I had that time back. But then again if I knew then what I know now....

I was building links a decade ago, back before I knew anything about SEO. Like a couple others in this thread, my first "backlinks" were an effort to get traffic from a niche forum rather than to fool Google. And surprise, surprise... that's a pretty good way to get traffic.

I first heard of SEO probably 7 years ago, and didn't truly invest time to understand it until about 4 years ago... at that point, I think my first backlink was a high PR blog comment.

When i started learning SEO, i built link with directory submission and social bookmarking. I got directory list from Directrycritic.com There were some fast approved directories in the list. So definitely my first back links was a directory, but i dont remember the directory name.
