just read about the new update that penalized gaming sites, is this all gaming sites or just the gaming sites that had spam on it? I have a gaming site that the traffic actually increased since the updates.

actually went from 50 visitors to 100 visitors a day.

I read that, why I made this post.

I think its just the game sites with spam on it.

I invested some time and money in this site and want to flip it soon, but its going to be hard if gaming sites are getting the shaft.

Did YOUR game site get the shaft? If not, then you shouldn't worry about what happens to other game sites. You should position your game site as one that survived Penguin 2 unscathed

If you did get the shaft, then figure out WHY you did.

I haven't thoroughly read that but am confident they are only taking down sites with spam links.

Google can not penalize all gaming, porn e.t.c site when people still search for them heavily. Doing that will only leave great opportunities for competitors to take over.

It's just the usual war on spam, keep off.

good point although almost all the biggest porn sites got penalized. which is good for the little guy that is running a porn site.

My new game site (a few weeks old now) jumped up the rankings this last week. Going from obscurity to 5-7 clicks per day on $1.50 CPC's. I couldn't be happier so far.

Only taking 25 sites than extrapolating those to "entire genres" is a bit silly. Reminds me of the ridiculousness of polling, but in this case it's even worse. Let's ask 10 people who the best search engine is, then based on that indicate what the entire population thinks *uuughhh*

sorry for the double post, but I felt the same way, I just get a kick out of going to the search engines since the updates and seeing my pages move up and my traffic increase, I was going to use this site to feed traffic to a forum but I'm getting to much traffic to waste it on that haha.

Since most of the larger porn sites are pretty well known, doesn't a lot of their traffic come from exact match searches? I could see a small percentage of traffic going down for individual video/particular long tail searches, but that is the dark side of the web anyway. They're used to being the people no one wants to link to and/or have a link from anyway.

In brief, regardless of any algo change possibly affecting porn I don't think that significantly touches their traffic.

It would only be the ones that have been working hard to build up super-spam link profiles. It is good to see those getting shot down.

I am also involved in the games side and it is VERY irritating that people who take the short cuts get ahead. It is really good to see some of them getting shot down in the rankings.

It means you knew the tricks and you are using that to rank your site, so please share that, others would also get benefited from that.

When will you guys start to understand how paid articles/blogging works?

That searchengineland article (link above) is obviously a paid link promoting searchmetrics.

    Welcome to Internet Marketing.

      no one said it wasn't.

ranks #1 for penguin 2.0 so its doing its job. haha.

up 100 visits per day since the updates, up to 300 visits per day and once my other keyword kicks in I will be around 1000 visits per day, the funny thing is I'm working with keywords that are reverses of each other.

now I need a good adsense theme.

I really hope the guys on flippa won't look down on my site because these seo sites are reporting that google slammed gaming sites.

It would look fishy if I sell it now so I should wait for awhile.

Is there anything on flippa that isn't fishy? I think fishy on flippa is expected by anyone in IM longer than six months. Just saying...

      ROTFLMAO!!!

I always say, searchengineland does not need us spamming links and
      they have their own agenda...

Google does not hate porn. Can't believe you guys even say such
      nonsense.

We are all missing one key point in this conversation. Google are slapping sites which don't have quality content. Any site that doesn't have quality content that benefits the reader or are building links unnaturally or irrelevantly are the sites that will be effected technically.

If you have a gaming site that has no valuable content then your shit on right away.
There are gaming sites out there that have all these wee games on them like a portfolio of games, no valuable content and useless really.

I have all of my favorite porn sites bookmarked, no need to google them LOL.

I think most porn traffic comes from that and direct, I don't see them going out and doing black hat links because everyone will link to the top porn sites anyway.

Mhh.. my gaming site has seen a surge in traffic after the update. Around 200/day. It's totally clean and minimal backlinking has been done.

I wouldn't really class these crappy arcade sites as "gaming" sites.

Most of them are spam, just copying the same games from every other site. Any retard can buy an arcade script, import 10k games and think that he is a webmaster.

Exactly what I was saying, these are the type of sites Google are targeting in the gaming niche.

This is not a great news for me, I was planning to launch a gaming website with 500-1000 free flash games.

I guess now I have to change the plan

I may be new and wet behind the ears, but the answer to the question is Yes. Google did punish ALL gaming sites that did "effective" SEO work via backlinks and content. I had a site that was seeing exponential growth until Penguin showed it's nasty little head. My site had hand picked games that I uploaded, reviewed, created unique thumbnails and wrote unique descriptions for each and every one of them. I was seeing 100 to 150 visits a day which was growing 20% each quarter. Last month I dropped it, went with a new domain name and have to start over due to my backlink history. Doesn't sound like they are only slapping crap sites, they also slap the guys trying to do the right thing. j/s
