Google Dance or Penguin Slap?

My site has currently dropped about from pos 15 page 2 to 38 page 4. This has happened suddenly about 4 days ago.

This was unwarranted especially since I had been recently building grassroots quality links, the kind Cutts always praises.

Is the G dance still around or should I dig into whether the Penguin 2 slap got me. I still have my links when I go info: www.mysite.com

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I see the same for a lot of other sites, it seems Google is praising junk sites in some of my search queries and good sites cannot be found. It is probably just a case of a google dance after the update more then likely you will start to see it rise back up in the rankings.

This is penguin update time so you need to give more days to know if it is Google Dance of Penguin Update.

My guess would be a little of both. I had a site recently that popped up on the first page after 4 days, then dropped off the map. 5 days after that it's back first page again, go figure. Just be careful about how aggressive you are with your linkbuilding, especially if its a new site.

Thanks clarkfaint - It's an aged domain. The thing that strikes me as a bit odd is that some new domain (only a few months) that has popped up around my position is still there.

I guess they might recently have changed relevancy for something where you have done backlinking through, how do you baclink and do you diversify your linkbuilding, so that it is based on articles, comments, blogposts, social bookmarkings, forum links etc?

    If not, start doing so!

Using your exact keyword aggressively in your links is a strong negative signal to Google also people uses Google Webmaster Tools > disavow a lot, then Google knows more about your bad neighbourhood with bad link sources.
