How To Know For Sure If You Have a Google Penalty?

Is there a way to know for certain?

I know you can submit a reconsideration request, but from what I understand, they just get back to you when it's done and say it's done. No specific info on any problems or if they removed the penalty.

I'd love to know any penalties I may have, especially regarding google not counting links coming into my site.

Any ideas, or any trusted services you guys know of?

Mark

I am having this same problem with my website but I am working on the content part because I think the only way I can bring my ranking back is by creating lot's or high quality content.

You can try majesticseo to at least give you an idea on your site profile. It will tell you the type of links you have, and the trust ranking. This way you will know where your links are coming from and if they are potentially spamy.

Submit your site to Google Webmaster Tools. That will tell you if you've suffered a penalty.

automatically or do I have to request it? I already have an account, in the labs section it says 'No new messages or recent critical issues.'
      Does that mean no penalty?

That does not mean you have penalty.

Few questions to make somethings clear:

Have you ranked in top 10-20 before?
Did you suffer from ranking drop lately? (if not then when)
URL would be nice, so I could check your backlinks

The problem with the reconsideration request is that it takes bloody ages!!

If you have been penalised its best to find out the cause - usually its either some of your links have gone - competitors are getting stronger OR you have bad links or your link profile is to heavy towards in name url.

lol gotta love some of those answers. The easiest way to know if you are penalized is to buy few good and strong backlinks and point them at your main keyword, if they move up you are good , if they don't move you are probably penalized. Easy fast & clean.

How To Know For Sure If You Have a Google Penalty?

You've been de-indexed. That's the only real penalty, in
        real terms.

What did you think when your site moved up? That other
sites were "penalized"? Is that the only way to move up
and down, is when someone gets a penalty? Google does
not work like that. Rearranging SERPs is not a penalty.

Re-evaluating the worth, keywords, backlinks, etc. is
        not a penalty.

NFL uses replay on all TDs. If one has a TD taken away due
to replay, are they being penalized?

You train for a race that you have always won. This time,
50 people decide to train harder and you finish 20th.

        Penalty?

People scream penalty way too much, when in reality there
        is no penalty.

If you ever get back on top, I can imagine that person coming
here and complaining about some penalty. What if 20 webmamsters
decide to work hard all at once? They can't move up until
google issues the sites above a penalty?

Paul I have to disagree here, I've been working in the past on sites which lost 20-60 positions after panda/penguin/etc and there was no way to get them up again. There's an algorytmical filter which is hard if not impossible to remove that's why I don't even try to touch penalized sites anymore.

          • I might be naive but I feel like there's some irony in purchasing links to see if you've been assessed a penalty. Isn't that one of the reasons that site owners are getting penalized by Google?

Quality content, more quality content, and a bit of optimization and networking in communities related to what you do seems to work pretty well these days.

Two ways to know. At least maybe.

Dropping 50 spots is not a google penalty. That would mean the site
at 51, would be suffering from a double secret penalty...

One way is a PR drop. Sometimes it is related to you buying and selling
links, penalty. Sometimes it's related to some links being gone, like sites
              taken off, pages down, etc.

              Another is a deindex.

Dropping in SERPs is rarely a penalty. Why would google just drop you in
SERPs? That would mean google operates on a negative SEO basis. That
sites cannot move up unless another site has a penalty. That would be
crazy. Too many intangibles to make you drop in SERPs other than a
              penalty.

How could new sites ever move up if google only moved around sites
based on penalties? You would never rank #1 unless that site suffered
a penalty. When you took the #1 spot, did you get there by someones
              penalty or your hard work?

A drop in PR does not always mean a drop in SERPs. How many here
keep saying PR does not matter?

You can't climb 50 spots and claim it's hard work, if at the same time
you claim you drop 50 spots because of a penalty. Now, how many
of you with a new site saw yourself rising to #150, 50, then 10 or
              higher?

I said ''buy''' only because it's a faster way to see results , however you can try it with the ''legit'' route too, ask for links to webmasters , guest posting etc.

Usually 5 real high pr (4-5) backlinks should be enough to see noticable results on a single keyword (low-med competition).

You have to look around if you are willing to buy. I own my domains but I don't sell backlinks.
