Niche may or may not be competitive. Its the keyword that you should concentrate on. If the keyword has competition then you have to decide.

To check keyword competition, Just google it and see the strength of the top 10 sites. Use SEOQuake browser addon.

I agree niche could be competitive or not, but the important thing is the keywords that we aim for. For instance, Weight Loss Niche is very competitive, yet it still have room for long tail keywords.
    Signature
I just wanna tell you that most of the links in the signature are trash and/or a trap to make you pay!

A quick way I use to determine this, is to head over to clickbank, take a look at the top 5 (or so) selling products in the niche you are researching, if the gravity is high for all of them, to me that means lots of sales are being made in that niche and a fairly good indication it is a competitive niche.

Where as some of the products for the less competitive niches will not have as high of gravity (typically).

    Good luck with your research.

And one you've picked a niche / keyword to target, don't fall into the trap of only focusing on how much "overall" competition there is. What's most important is the competition on page 1. And, to a greater extent, the top 3 results.

It doesn't matter if there are 1,000,000 competing results or 100. The only thing that matters is your ability to outrank the results on page 1.
