Should I change a crummy (but indexed) index.html page?

A year or two ago, I bought a domain and put up a couple of paragraphs. It got indexed. It was .index.html page. Now, I want to build the site. The verbiage on there is not at all what I want to have on the page. It's relevant, but the not appropriate for the new goal of the site. Should I just chuck whatever is there and start over or is there any value there, the page having been there over a year or two.

Is this a difficult question to answer? Is there any value to retaining the index.html page with the couple of paragraphs of (now) non-relevant verbiage, or can I just rewrite the page and move forward to build the site? If I should retain the index.html as it stands now, what to do with it? And how would I have a home page, name it home.html or what?

You shouldn't worry about changing the text on a page. As long as the new page has a comparable amount of text and is focused on the same sort of topic, your page's ranking probably won't change much. You will probably just move up or down for some long tail keywords.

Thanks. Is there any value created by a domain and (crummy but relevant) page that is a couple of years old?
