I have a question guys, I want to make a computer technician product that has HIGH, and I mean HIGH competition. Out side of doing some pay per click, and social media, how would I get the site ranked? And Also, is it a bad idea to try and use a highly searched keyword? Pro's and con's?
I would like to know what everything thinks before I register a domain name.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Cody

(I asked this question to begin with in the main forum, and I was told it was the wrong place and was pointed here.) I'm still new to the forum guys so go easy! I'm learning.

Firstly I'd ask what method you have used to determine the keywords are highly competitive?

This is the foundation of keyword research and an area that a lot of people get wrong.

If your using Google Keyword tool it's telling you competition between advertisers for that keyword, meaning it will cost more for an ad if it's "high".

Google keyword tool is good to show you the amount of traffic that you are getting if you want to know how competitive the keyword is ,SEO wise , you want pic the 10 first business ranking in google and go to Open Site Explorer (show you the domain authority and page authority + the type of back links they have) and also you want to check moonsy.com/ where you can see the Mozrank of your competition (higher Mozrank mean bad news).
If you want to take them down Mamadou say one thing, one thing only ,you have to purchase some high PR domaines links baby!!

    Cody,
When you say "I mean HIGH competition", is this because the keyword tool is showing a high CPC? I recommend spending a LOT of time doing good keyword research to learn appropriate targeted search terms with good volume which apply to people who would find your product useful. There may be some appropriate keywords that will allow you to start ranking while you work on the more competitive term(s) as a long-term goal. Keep in mind that the Google keyword tool has several flaws and does not provide the complete picture for keyword research alone. Also, I recommend using the 'Exact' checkbox in the keyword tool if you are not already, rather than 'Broad'.

Once your keyword research is solid, remember hat the competition that truly matters is the SERP competition, and more specifically, you need to analyze those sites that are ranking in the top 10 on the first page of the search results in Google for the term(s) that you enter. At this point, the keyword tool is not helpful, but rather you will need to learn to analyze on-page and off-page SEO strategies being used by these competitors and if you decide to give it a go or hire someone else to assist you, keep in mind that it's not just about pros and cons of higher search volumes, but rather that your ideal situation is high search volume with lower SERP competition and that highly competitive keywords will take time and money/effort to rank.

      To answer your question Yes..

Thank you! That helped a lot. But here's a question for you. What if I was wanting to rank for Virus Removal, and it had 550,000 global monthly, and 201k local searches. All the big anti-virus' would be near impossible to outrank. So what would your strategy be? A longer-tailed keyword? .... This SEO stuff is tuff stuff now... Whatever advice anyone could give on that would be great.

      Thanks in advance!

You are correct in that it is a very competitive term. That is a longer term project, no doubt. Not impossible, but it will take time and money, there is no way around that. Meanwhile, if you are serious about it, I would suggest setting up the framework of your site to support this and create pages of your site that target the lower competition/decent traffic keywords that make sense when integrated into the whole of your site with solid on-page SEO and off-page SEO for those searches so that you can get some momentum in the short term while still building momentum and moving toward success in the long term as an authority site for BIG searches that are competitive. Once you get rolling and prove out the concept and build up some age and success, only then would I spend the resources and dough targeting the biggies like virus removal. You'd be surprised what a handful of appropriate lower competition related terms can add up to in terms of total traffic...
