A friend of mine who owns a Law Office recently signed up for an overseas company to do SEO. They promised a first page top 5 ranking in Google maps for businesses for certain keywords. There was no onsite SEO done. Well they came through, how did they accomplish this?

Google maps is nothing to do with on-site, it's ranking a free google business listing and not the website.

They were already registered with google maps. Did they just change the google maps listing with relevant keywords?

Yes - and if that wasn't enough, they got backlinks.

It's very simple, just most people create very non-optimised listings and then wonder why they don't show up at the top of the list. Anyone who knows what they're doing can improve these very easily.

They should have given your friend a report that details all the work they did for him.

Well it looks like they did what was asked. How they do what they do. Is really their own business.

I know is not as simple as it appears but I was just wondering what they might of done to cause such a drastic jump in such a short time.

I think they are talking about local results. Depending on the SERP Google may show a mixture of Local and Organic. It's not a matter of ranking the places listing, the actual business website appears in the SERPs next to a map inset. For some SERPs if you aren't Local you will have a tough time ranking. For Google Local= Companies with a confirmed local address (Google Places)

Yes it was local results. Before he signed up he was on page 3-4 for Auto accident attorney + city name and divorce attorney + city name. Now he's on the first page top 3. How did they accomplish this? They were already on Google local business results but nowhere near the 1st page.

I suspect they did 2 things:

    1. Optimised the Google Places/Local/Maps listing by selecting the best categories, creating a new category, adding a well written description, added images and videos, added some testimonials and so on.

    2. Built backlinks into the Google Places/Local/Maps listing. Yes that's right, backlinks to your maps listing helps.

He's not talking about ranking the actual places listing if I understand correctly. He is talking about ranking as a website that is tied to Google places listing.

Yea they just built solid links. Wait some time and see how your rankings change after a month, because you can spam a bunch of a links to a page, and will only rank high for a couple of weeks.

  • It would also depend how much competition he has for those keywords. But you should always double check when you outsource SEO. Make sure they're using white hat techniques that are (more or less) resistant to Google updates.
    My 2 cents.

    hahaha..

using of Google Maps/listings/G+ to get good rankings in SERPS is really an awesome technique but there are very few people around who really know this tech. and Also understand how to handle it.

this is not a usual link building or seo or listings thing/.. Google is very serious in listings now a days... if you used listings just for the sake of rankings and forget some Major points, google could hurt your website...

Anyhow, Fact is This Google map listing work perfectly. (If you do it correctly)

      Not really.

It's easy once you understand basically what factors are important and Google associate certain keywords with certain industries and the citation value of different sources.

      It's not rocket science.

Google Maps has changed a ton over the years, so much in fact that it's just a small secondary service for my firm now when it used to be a focus.

I would be weary of overseas unless there is a track record. Many firms use overseas providers (which is fine), but many don't do their due diligence.

It took me over a year to find the best SEO solution for my clients when I started, but it was worth it when I finally did (USA based by the way).
