performing keyword research - am I not lost?

I think I'm lost doing a keyword research, each time
I'm looking for a keyword, I end up with lots and
lots that it'll be difficult to choose one.

Most of marketers say that a keyword with global
monthly search of less than 2500 (or 3000 in some
cases) is good, provided that it's "in-quotes" search
results is less than 60,000.

Now, it's very difficult for me to get a keyword that
has 60,000 results even when the keyword is in
quotes (maybe this is as a result of the niche I'm
in).
But....

Can anyone just simplify things for me, like a step-
by-step thing? I'll be grateful.

Many a times the number of search results shown by googles against a keyword search is over estimated. To get a better estimate, go to the search settings and change the number of search results per page to 100 (instead of 10). Now do the search with quote. Now, go the last page of the search result. The number of search results you see there just below the search box is a much better estimate.

With this you can find keywords that match your criteria.
