Domain age is very important for any site on the web. It plays a big role to set a URL position in SERPs and Page Rank.

Starting to think its not as important as it use to be. Got a couple new sites, brand new domains, and already got 490 visitors daily from google search in just 3 weeks of work. The other, which is the same age has 80 visitors daily from search. The one that has the most is the one I spend more time on.

When my website was new, small, boring, and generally crappy, I used to get over 500 a day even though I paid for no advertising. Now I'm getting less than 100 a day organic, and quite a few I pay for. Considering my website is about 100 x the size now and has about 50k natural back links and massive social media links its very confusing to me.

It tends to go with my current theory that they get your hopes up first before they crush you, because it's funnier that way.

Lol, your probably right on that one. Seen that happen to a couple of my sites. But a few still do well. Goal...build 30000 pages in the first three months...get rich, then watch your site die! If only I can automate the process!

Domain age is very important because this show age of incoming links, age of web content, and the date the domain was registered, this is important to rank well in Google results.

domain age is not as important as before in google. nowadays most of the domains can rank in top 3 even though they are very new.(1-2 years old)
I also noticed that old domains are more powerful on bing and yahoo.

My guess is the old domains are just as effective as new domains. The only thing that could make a difference is if the old domain actually has page rank and quality links already pointing to it. Age alone, is not enough.

Yep, domain age does affect your sites ranking. That's why sites/domains that are 5+ years old go for large amounts on Flippa, compared to newly developed sites. You can still rank next to older sites if you are really good at SEO though.

Here TRUST is the main factor. Google considers an old domain to be trustworthy. It shows that the site is well established. We all know that trust and creditability both plays a big role, especially after Penguin 2.0 and an old domain always scores high when these two factors are concerned. And this is the reason why most of smart SEO guys prefer to build a high PR networks of old domains.

Domain age is always important but that doesn't mean you cannot rank well with a new domain. It completely depends how many quality links you are building.

        Hi ianbirch,

Domain age has as much importance now as it always had.

        Which is to say... none.

That's right, domain age has never been a ranking factor in Google. People often confuse "Trust", which is earned over time, with "domain age" which is totally independant of Trust.

Having an indexed web page, that has earned trust over time, requires that the domain be of the same age or greater, because the page is identified by the URI, which includes the domain name. But the Domain age itself carries no weight in ranking.

Remember that correlation does not imply causation, which is a very apropo to the context of this discussion.

You know what, it matters but seriously not a determining factor. You can outrank a page that is older than yours if you have better content, better onsite optimization and better promotions. It isn't that complicated for the most part...Google wants the best content on the page and most content needs to be updated so it isn't unusual for a newer site to outrank if it is better received

Thank you for all the replies to my question, the reason i asked was i see alot of domains/sites ranking aged 6-12 months above older domains/sites.
i have been told in the past buy a domain with age and you cant go wrong?its easier to rank than a new domain?
But with the penguin/polar bear(whatever they call it) doesnt it depent on the past links to that domain..ie crap links - the domains useless untill you can get rid of those links?
With a new domain you choose the links..ie good links if done correctly....That must mean (in my eyes) that aged domains are not worth bothering with..and its better to start with a new domain.
