Do Links from Bookmark Sites Really Count?

I see all kinds of references all the time to "bookmark this" and "social bookmark that". And I have done A LOT OF BOOKMARKING!!! I have used them all (almost literally) - Technorati, Mixx, Reddit, Digg, Spurl, Blinklist, and on and on and on...

I have done this for multiple sites (and multiple pages on each site). I have done the bookmarking myself. I have used Onlywire. I have used SocialMarker. I have used software submitters. I have done A LOT!

My question is, do these really count for anything or is this just another thing that all the "gurus" do because "everybody is doing it" and "YOU NEED TO BOOKMARK"?

The reason I ask is that, out of the THOUSANDS of bookmarks that I have created, I only see a handful of them listed in sites that link to my site (if I do a search for "links:mydomain.com"). Most of these are from the Big Guys (Technorati and Digg mostly). Is is really worth the time and effort to do all this work?

As a side question. I am a subscriber to Angela's monthly links too. At the start I thought this looked great. But I notice the same thing with most of the links that she recommends - I hardly ever see any of them listed as linking to my site. Does anyone have any experience with the benefit of these links?

I have been working on these two lines myself lately and the results are very similar to your findings.

I think bookmarking helps you to get your site indexed quickly but it doesn't gurantee you better PR or traffic, that's my personal opinion.

I have also subscribed to Angela's links last month and have published the links to the sites mentioned but the backlinks were picked from only 5 sites after 25 days. But, I am willing to wait for some more time as it usually takes time to get your links registered.

I have been doing SEO stuff from 4 years and have 3 sites doing well but it always seems not enough backlinks so I keep looking for ways to get more backlinks. However, I have noticed that if you have got handful of Quality links from authority sites, you don't need any bookmarking/forums/profile links.

How are you checking to see which links are being recognized? Don't use Google! They are notorious for only showing you a portion of the links they're really seeing. Probably the best way is Yahoo's Site Explorer function. It isn't foolproof either, but it's better than Google by far. I'm sure there are other ways to check, too, but honestly I don't really sweat this too much. I would not spend too much time on any one way to get backlinks. Split your time between social bookmarks (some of them work, as you noted), Angela's links (I've found the blog comment links work best, by the way), and the other major link gathering source I like is setting up free blogs from dofollow sources. I use an Ebay blog and a few others: NewsCloud, Start4All, and Blog.co.uk. There are many others out there. Just set up a blog and be sure to ping it using pingomatic or something similar every time you post something new.

You have to give your links some time to mature. Sometimes you get some obscure link and you think it is worthless. But some sites get older and links from them can be valuable over time. If it is one way link, I will get as much as I can.

Zeus66 - I knew that Google was bad about showing then total number of links (via search anyway). Someone showed me one time how to get on my Google webmasters account and check the links there (many more links show there). I will have to check this out again and see if I can remember how to get this information.

I use a tool called TrafficTravis to check my backlinks and ranking in the search engines. It is a great tool for this. It shows links/ranking by any of the search engines. Like you say, Yahoo does have the best results and that is who I was refering to.

I have set up blogs and Web 2.0 {Squidoo, HubPages, Weebly, etc) sites to form a "mini-net" too. I do get links back from these sites, but many of them still do not show as well.

    Thanks...

Social Bookmarking is good in the way that it generates organic links to your site, or at least it's supposed to. It's a way for other people to promote or share your site. You make friends on the social bookmarking sites and swap bookmarks with people who have the same interests as you.

I think if you pound out 1000 links using an auto submitter then there's a fair chance that many of them will never be caught. But...having all 1000 of them caught within the first hour of bookmarking would be bad too. So in a way, it's like dropping a net out in the ocean with 1000s of links and they all float to the surface at different times and get picked up at different times so in the end, it looks natural, and that's what you're aiming for.
