Does anyone use Disqus commenting system? Was it a good choice?

Can anyone vouch if adding disqus commenting system is a bad idea or not? A lot of my content is somewhat controversial and was thinking maybe the system may get readers to interact and stay on my website longer. I’ve never had any type of commenting system on any of my websites so unsure of what to expect.
I was kind of afraid that adding a comment system might inspire spam. Hell, I already get a good amount of spam attacks as it is.
From what I’ve heard is links in comments don’t pass pagerank or negatively affect your site, and spammy links won’t affect my website if I let comments go unchecked. Is any of this true? Anyone give a little feedback on their dealings with the system?
