Has Google Penalized my site?

Hello, I would like to get some SEO advice on my website Outdoor Travel Adventures | Hiking Trips | Activity Holidays

The site is a couple years old with a page rank of 2 forever it seems. I have a few different people from around the world contributing unique content on a pretty regular basis. We have ton's of content and I think it's a pretty decent website with lots of time invested into it.

For some reason we rank horrible for any keywords. I really don't know how to check to see if my site is being penalized or where to go now with it to try and make it rank better.

I'm looking for suggestions or someone to take a look and offer some advice for me. Sometimes I consider going to a SEO company but I don't know what one is legit and not going to hurt my site even more with some crazy link building scheme.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

    Hey,

    I checked out your website, I dont see you utilizing any keywords off page that are relevant to your site unless you are trying to rank for first names. I see Michael, Jenny and i see your company name but no other good keywords are being used off page... This could be one of the reasons. Even if you are using your targeted keyword 5% of your total backlinks you would be much better off then using none.

    Your backlink sources look good, you just arent utilizing them correctly.

      Thank you both of you, I did do that search yukon and realized it was still indexed but I was wondering if it was still a penalty just making me rank low for keywords.

      I always though you weren't supposed to use anchor text as it was considered bad so I would just build links by having people comment on related blogs and leave their name, website, email in the field which probably results in most of the first name links.

      So I should be putting in my keywords in the name field? I tried that a few times and I actually got a email from a webmaster once saying "I know you read my post because I can tell from your comment however you should be using your name or the name of your website and not using the comment form to get anchor text keywords". She went on to say that is not important anymore to google.

        Yes you are absolutely right that using your name on commenting is the right way to go, although you should be trying to get other types of backlinks to your site instead of focusing on one source (commenting). I know that it can be tough in getting other links. But the more sources of links you have the better.

    Thanks guys! I've done a few guest post so maybe I need to do more of that. What other link building strategies do you guys suggest beside commenting?
