What kind of basic SEO? Submitting sitemap will take more time. Better share it on FB or Twitter.

    Try these methods:-
    1) Fetch URL in Webmaster
    2) Ping Technique
    3) make slight changes in your pages.
    4) Google/addurl
    5) Use High PR link building like, Google/bookmarks etc....

    Might solve your problem

Note: Check your robots file, have you block your main directory or not?

Google will take time to index your website. If you have submitted sitemap recently then have patience Or you can use other methods like Fetch as Google, Submit URL to Google in Webmaster tool etc.

livemusic, it would work because once Google see a change in your website, he would visit your website again! That's why it's NOT a very good idea to update your website really often because this could "confuse" Google robot!

If you are just now trying to get a site indexed, and Google has already been there, why would it need to go again to index it?

Plus, you saying not to update your website often... just recently somebody on here told me exactly the opposite... to write up regular site updates!

      More confusion with SEO!
