Hi,

I'll start from the beginning, I used to run a website for users to get 'freebies' using a referral network (several years ago now). The site quickly ranked number 1 spot, for a highly competitive keyword on google.com and co.uk. The site was giving me quite a good income whilst in University (in fact instead of cash I was given iPhones, Macbook's and Playstations, which I then sold to friends or eBay). Which my friends kind of thought was a bit suspicious where I was getting them from haha. I later sold the website for a chunk of cash so I could go traveling.

The site gained number 1 spot because I was using an WP auto poster from topic related sites. I also used Scrapebox for backlinks etc... and there was a lot of content which was actually not even spun.

Checking google now, the sites no longer ranked 1, and instead some crappy website.

Now, I'm looking to start up again and knock the competition off number 1 spot on Google. My problem is, a lot has changed since I was last doing this - for example I don't think a wordpress auto poster would work anymore.

I was looking to:
  • setup a landing page from themeforest
  • get some content written explaining the procedure
  • video from fiverr explaining the procedure
  • setup a facebook page and buy several thousand likes, and display them on the landing page

However, last time I was gaining backlinks from people linking to my automated news articles. I was going to scrap this, this time. So my question is what would be the best way to gain backlinks for basically a landing page getting people to sign up for a freebie site? I'm looking for some advise - would this even work now?

You can use sites which are already indexed in Google, as most of the sites are penalized so they are out of Google index now, you might be using a list of websites which are few years old site so check them if they are still good and indexed in Google or not.

So it would be good idea if you put your relevant keywords in Google and find related blogs, forums, videos etc. for link building purposes.

Thanks for replying, most of the other competitive sites are doing exactly the same thing as me so it's quite hard to get links on them. Maybe thinking of guest blogging about getting freebies and slipping a link in there

You're right that things have changed. I'd delete all of the auto-posted content and re-up like the site was brand new. Also, you didn't say where it's currently ranking: if it's in the first 5 pages ago I'd say you may be able to salvage things pretty easily. If not...you may want to start over with a new site. All those 2010-era links can hurt a site for a lifetime.

Thanks for posting - I've setup a new site completely (the other one I sold). So it's a brand new site. I've done some schema stuff for the site. However, like you say none of my old techniques no longer work
