I'm way behind the curve on SEO. Exact match use to be an advantage.

Is there any point to exact match domains now?

Or is would it be better to build a site on a more memorable, brandable, shorter domain these days?

Depends what your goal is for the site.

If you are looking for short term gains, than an exact match domain is fine.

If you are trying to build a long term business then a brandable domain is the way to go.

I actually sell brandable domains so I'm partial. However, there's still an emd ranking advantage if it's a quality site. EMDs are fine longer run if you're committed to just doing whats in your emd.

I did an infographic on this very subject that might be informative.

Actually, nowadays the very good EMDs are almost all gone. If you can find one that has a high search number, then go ahead. Otherwise, sticking with short brandable domains may be the way to go.
