301 redirects - effect on rankings?

I have an old site that needs some of its URL's updated to be better optimized for certain keywords.

However, I know that changing the URL of a page is essentially a death sentence for its SERP rankings.

I've been reading up on 301 redirects and apparently I can (hopefully) preserve the ranking of the old pages with the new URL's, if I keep the old pages up but 301 redirect them to the new pages.

I just need confirmation from someone who has done this before: Does this work? Will my new URL's achieve the same SERP rankings as my old ones, if they use 301 redirects?

I need some assurance that this will work before I roll it out on my site. The site is currently earning money and I don't want to screw that up.

The 301 redirect will pass the juice along, but it has been my experience that this transfer isn't 100%, so you should definitely be prepared for at least a slight drop in rankings.

For the most part the rankings will not pass through 100% with a 301 redirect, but with a little extra work you should be able to get it back up.

For the most part, I believe a redirect landing page will assume its role as replacement of the redirected page and earn the same PR votes as the redirected page. Like any other page though, page quality and keyword density on the new page will also be a deciding factor in the overall ranking.

GyuMan82 is indeed correct - a 301 will pass most of the link juice on, but not 100%. Also, it can take a little time for your rankings to settle after the redirects are placed, but they will do so over time.

    I hope this helps!

If A site have 4 PR and it is redirect 301 to B site that have 1 PR. There are chances to increase PR for B sites because A site passes all link juice, DA and PA to B sites.

Yes definitely, your new url's will achieve the same SERP rankings as that of the old one if you do 301 redirects because the link juice will get transferred from old to new one. You have to just keep in mind that you do the redirects properly and redirect the old url's to the relevant new ones.

301 redirect is a permanent redirect usually which passes between 90-99% of link juice to the redirected page which means in this 301 redirect will transfer domain authority, visitors and also your rankings in Google.

You can loose 10-20% of your link juice by that, if the competition of the terms which was linked to your subpages was not so high you positions probably will remains but for high competition phrases you may face a little lower positions than before you redirected those subpages.

Things are pretty ambiguous in this thread...

Let's try again. I bought a PR2 domain and redirected it to my website.

    1. Will it increase my website's PR while having a positive effect on my keyword rankings?

    2. Will it have a negative effect on my keyword rankings?

    3. What if I make a blog on the PR2 domain and have a dofollow link to my website? Mind you the domain has already been redirected to my original website for which Im doing SEO.

Appreciate your responses. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Hi,

We have been using 301 redirection on our website & old web pages from the past 2-3 years.
E.g. We have set a redirect to www.grazitti.com/zakscorer-app to www.grazitti.com/zakscorer
We haven't seen any loss in SEO so far and everything is working fine as before.

With no fear you can go for the redirection implementation using .htaccess

Please make sure to redirect the links within the domain.

The short answer is yes, I'd recommend you develop your content under the SEO friendly domain and 301 redirect your Company name.

    Here's why.

Two things have the greatest impact on your rankings:

    1) Good quality links with *decent anchor text* from a diverse range of relevant domains, positioned relatively high up on the page and preferably in the content.

    2) Unique good quality content updated reasonably regularly (2-3 times a week)

Just having keywords in the domain name alone won't have a great impact. However, as Peter Wailes (top digital marketing expert) explains, "Domain name keyword usage gains most of its strength through what anchor text people are then likely to link to you with, not so much from inherent value, which is lower in my opinion".

So you'll get links with better anchor text and they are in my top two for impacting your rankings. The redirect from your company name is beneficial from a marketing point of view as it looks better for brand perception to have 'www.companyname.com' on your business cards, letterheads etc than 'www.great-keywords-but-not-very-user-fr... :-D

    Hope that helps!

Yes, with out any worries you can go with 301 redirect from old url to new url. I have done this before, every thing works fine with out any problem.

With 301 redirect all the BL and traffic will pass to new url. No worries, you can move confidently

Once done with 301 redirect, generate new XML sitemap and replace with old file. Submit your new urls & new XML Sitemap in webmaster tools

When you are changing your url, back links also go with url, if your backlinks are bad, your new web page ranking will decrease other vise not effected. But URL lose Google trust so some ranking you can lose.

I changed all the urls on a website and lost nothing. Changed posts to pages and pages to posts

Simply copied the content, title and added a word or two to the new url then 301'd the old page to the new post.

    No problems encountered

301 redirection won't pass that much of link juice or added value in your SEO. but it can allows your audience to identity and easily memorize any form of your website URL by their own.
