That whole thing was weird. It's almost like someone was trying to expose spam methods so he could remove them. It doesn't make much sense why someone who was banking on those methods would make it personal with Cutts.

      Careful friend....your green is showing.

MANY MANY MANY high ranking white as white hat sites have been damaged from the last Google updates, and negative SEO is a reality now.

Not the ones that get "hit", but the ones that get impacted the most. Those who know, adapt. Those who dont, lose. Kind of sad really.

I've seen an increase in traffic over the past week or so. Definitely more good than bad on my end.

First time I've actually taken a look at mozcast tbh. Just sounds silly to me so I never bothered to check it out.

I've seen a few sites move but nothing too major. 113 is a record as far as I know.

So far only seeing a slight increase overall across all sites. Maybe the activity is in other niches - anyone see anything major?? Pretty much titters over at WMW too.

            Still seeing lots of Blogspot spam and article directory stuff in results;

Sites I'm tracking were mostly unaffected by what MozCast says was huge activity.

However ... one site that had 7 keywords on Page 1 had all 7 keywords fall to Page 20 or lower. Can't say for sure if it was due to some new algorithm change, or the delayed effect of a competitor doing negative SEO on the domain. About a month ago someone sent many thousands of very spammy backlinks to the site I'm referring to, and the same to 30 other sites in the same niche. I assumed the negative SEO attempt didn't work, but I can't say for sure whether this huge drop in rankings for this one site is due to negative SEO, recent algorithm changes, or some combination of both.

Whenever there is a news about Google algo updates, we site owners tend to act like school kids who are eagerly waiting for the exam results. Even if we had done our exams well, well the final decision (Pass, just pass or Fail) is in the hands of the Management (THE Google).

What an interesting lack of reaction from a forum filled with people who identify themselves as 'active SEOs.'

Comments ranging from, "Duh, here's a picture..." to "I DON'T CARE" etc.

Contrast that to this guy here:

He's going to take his life over this new update.

I'm interested because I'm running a bunch of experiments to see what ranks 'right now.' I guess I'm alone in that

Couldn't agree more! When I see people on here yawning over major Google updates it's clear to me they don't really get much of their business referrals from Google search, or their clients don't rely on Google search.

Then they'll claim that their sites (and their clients) sites are so pure, and their SEO expertise is "so refined" that they are immune to the huge changes in Google's algo.

There is a SERIOUS amount of blood in the water out in the cyber ocean right now. Blogspot spam is DOMINATING search results, along with many other spam platforms, and if you spend any time on webmaster forums you can see the pain felt by white hat businesses who never used a dirty black hat trick in their life.

Our income model would not die if Google went the way of the dodo bird, but we would have a 60% decrease in profit.

So yeah - it's a REALLY big deal when Google rolls over in bed.

Why would you need to run a bunch of experiments? That's exactly
the crap google is trying to stamp out.

Paul, there are many valid reasons you likely should take your own life - but I agree that Google updates aren't one of them. I'm just kidding, in case you didn't know. I don't think that guy should react that way either, hopefully he's just joking.

Since you asked, I'm running experiments as a matter of self preservation.

Over the last ten years I've become accustomed to leaching as much income from the Google trough as possible. I have no plans on changing that, no matter how many updates they have.

Even if there was no money in it, I'd still do it out of 'academic' curiosity. Call it 'habit' at this point.

Google isn't the only method I experiment with. I test social media marketing and email marketing quite a bit as well. I've also been doing PPC and video marketing experiments as well. So far I haven't messed with TV ads, print, or cold calling, but I'm not ruling any of it out.

There's one thing I've learned selling things online since 2003 is that complacency in success is the greatest barrier to even more success.

What I find interesting is that people who work in a volatile and constantly evolving medium are surprised by change.

Businesses fail every second of the day. Some people kill themselves over it and some dust themselves off and get back to work. 9 times out of 10, the reason for the failure is poor planning.

Ok so, making a suicide meme would be a little bit distasteful. Even by my lowball sense of humor. But I did find a good video clip explaining,
What's the difference between a "Good" and a "Bad" SEO/Website owner.

Val Kilmer is playing the Bad SEO/Site Owner
Robert De Niro is playing the Good SEO/ Site Owner

They are discussing Google updates in this clip.

We've actually seen traffic and SERP increases with the last few updates... Sucks to hear about people getting knocked out of the rankings and losing business over it, but on the flip side of that coin, there is someone celebrating their new rankings as they take those positions over and start getting all that traffic.

Yeah Barry - seeing a lot of splogs and such ranking high. My guess is that these domains will likely be hit as the weeks and months go on. In our niche the splogs are taking up a lot of the real estate. Can't imagine Google leaving it that way.

Come to think of it this might be exactly how a algo change to deny tiered and pyramid link building would slowly roll out as the crawlers reasses links. Might even explain what the world happened to the pagerank update.

Of course all any of us can do is speculate, but the above certainly makes a lot of sense and seems like a plausible explanation for what might be happening.

I know - it's taking entirely to long for the PR update, which is scary! Google knows what up and it's obvious that they are either delaying it, updating less than normal, or doing away with it entirely.

It's possible they want to wait until this big bunch of quality/spam updates are completed before updating the Toolbar PR.

If they do manage to 'go upstream' then it's likely there will be a lot of sites devalued or removed from the link graph - this would result in big PR changes for sites benefiting directly from certain types of link schemes, and those who indirectly benefit as well.

Perhaps they want people to see their PR reduction immediately after the update - it could be useful feedback to get people to change their ways and stop spamming up the web.

Funny thing is, with every update they roll out, you'll continue to see people on forums complaining about how there's crappy sites ranking above theirs lol.

I've just built some Amazon affiliate sites of my own (which I actually put time into) and they increased in ranking when penguin 2.0 was rolled out. Since then, they have been doing even better with these updates.

These are sites with about 4,000 words (or more) worth of content on the homepage, and about 20 affiliate links.

Today I see less traffic but higher conversions so far.

I also noticed that a new site from June 19th has debuted in the top 20. I used the same exact backlink sources as another site that went downhill on May 5th. Around 40 higher PR backlinks to multiple interior pages and the home page. This site is also a partial match domain (PMD).

My other site that I built at the end of May which has had no backlinking done at all now shows 24 links. These are from sources like 'whois scrapers.' Still, the number surprised me. However, that site has remained completely dead to ranking with no active linking so far.

      Premature considering Cutts tweet

Multi-week rollout going on now, from next week all all the way to the week after July 4th.
That gives it like ten days to go.

I misread it completely. I missed the part about a full week after July 4th. Whoa.

I wonder if they're making an infrastructure change - merging indexes or something along those lines. Whatever they're doing, this could be big...

Yeah it seems to suggest that rather than just an algo change the crawlers are being given the time to do something - maybe like recording entirely new metrics. I can't recall a roll out taking weeks before.

Indeed. An 'algo change' to me involves a programming change of some sort. This type of protracted update seems to indicate a large scale change 'behind the scenes.'

I'm sure they've invested many millions in 'search quality' in the last few years. Their technology might be totally upgraded in the next few weeks.

For the last week everything looks pretty stable here.

Sure there are some ups and downs of 20-25 pages here and there but mostly that's just like one keyword out of a list of 10-20 keywords and nothing different then the usual dancing that you see all year long.

Looks like I don't need that subscription to a certain link builder tool anymore lol!

The thing is we don't have complete knowledge of content marketing, website management and search engine optimization, thats why we get penalized....

We need to think broadly, we need to work with quality, no update is going to harm us.

    Why don't About.com, eHow.com get penalized?

Their economic capacity is much greater than the average site. Their 'real world' value can be translated in financial terms. The average website cannot be.

But i agree with your sentiment. Higher quality can only help.
