I would like to start testing PPC to promote my service/website. I'm new to PPC and would like some recommendations on books, guides, etc. to help along the way, so I don't burn to much money from my inexperience.

Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately the only way to really learn PPC is by trial and error, which yes means you're going to burn through some money.

I know Perry Marshall offers PPC training guides, but they are quite expensive (you can probably find it free if you look hard enough though) and people are split on whether or not his stuff works.

If you are a complete newb to PPC though you will probably learn some stuff through his work, but trial and error is ultimately going to be your bread and butter training in PPC.

Exactly, practice it.. read the guidelines and tutorials of Adwords and go with lower budget, if any product is giving you money then increase it at higher level.. so you have to test what works and what doesn't works..

Thank you. I'm on Perry Marshall's list and was thinking about getting his book, but I haven't purchased any of his guides.

I happen to like Perry Marshall's ideas. Howie Jacobson's "Google adwords for dummies" is also an easy book to get your head around. Howie takes quite a different angle on advertising from Perry - you may find you get on with him better. http://askhowie.com He's also got quite a bit of free stuff as has Perry.

Get their books, put them into gear and you'll find out which direction you're going in. In other words, what kind of marketer you are ;-)

There is a WSO which appears to be worthy of a mention... I haven't purchased it myself as PPC isn't my focus right now but I am thinking of integrating it into my promotional activities. Here is the link (I have no association with the seller btw): http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...-training.html

PPC Coach is one of the best places to start. I learned on my own and I'm loving the results so far but thats going to cost you some dough.

Your in good hands with Will.
