According Ahrefs, 42% of my links are sitewide links.

Is this bad?

And yes, my rankings do seem to have taken a hit.

I don't think that having sitewide links is bad.
May be your ranking hits because of the latest Google update.

    At that percentage, yes.

I did a lot of testing with this about 4-5 years ago and sitewide links have a HUGE effect on rankings if your website is new or it's a majority of total link percentage.

If you had sitewide links at 5%, that would seem more "natural".

yes, it's bad. Too many side wide links. If only a few of them, from one or two side. That will be fine. 42% is quite high.

They could be bad if the website (blog!) has a lot of pages, because it will look UNNATURAL for Google to see that you have 10,000 backlinks from ONE website! But if you make it in content (you will get a backlink from only certain pages!) // So I suggest you should try Guest blogging and stop Sitewide backlinking!
