How do you get started guest blogging?

Hey WarriorForum, trying to expand my company's SEO profile.
I've started / have been doing the following:
  • Writing a press release to submit to prlog / myprgenie / prurgent / pressreleasepoint at least once a week
  • Posting on classified sites (Backpage, us free ads, Craigslist for local exposure not backlinks)
  • Started a blog for the site, hosted externally on blogspot: dcomcomputers.blogspot.com
  • Written articles on goarticles and ezinearticles
  • Submited our sites to various directories, facebook, and twitter. Well one site on facebook, the other is just on twitter.

I want to expand to guest blogging and start getting a more varied set of backlinks. What is the best way to go about this? How do I reach out to people asking to guest blog. Most of our posts are written as how to articles involving working with a specific product we sell.

  • Dotcomcomputers,

I would start by reaching out to companies or individuals that are in touch with your target market. For example a book printer might reach out to publishers to guest post on their site or a mechanic shop might reach out to car enthusiast forums. So you want to find people who you aren’t really competing with but that serve your target market in some other way.

I have found that simply sending an email or calling (when appropriate) is a good way to start the conversation. I also like to use the premise that I need “help”. When you reach out to people for help it makes them feel needed and empowered. For example, “I was wondering if you could help us in collaborating on content” or “I need your expertise to reach our customers and your website would be a great place to do that”. Or whatever works for you.

As far as your content goes, how-to articles are always great but if you are looking for something different (i.e. not just related to what you sell directly), you could try writing about topics that affect the industry as a whole. I’m not really sure what you are selling so its hard to go into too much detail but if you can write about topics that would be of interest to people looking for your products but maybe haven’t purchased them yet, that is always helpful.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

Any of the guest posting I've done has always been secured by reaching out to a site directly.

Start with 10 sites and contact the editor of each one, individually. Write a custom pitch, explain why you would love to write for their site, a little about the type of content you would provide and links to samples of your work.

Then, make a new list of 10 sites to pitch and do it again.

Using this method has landed me some guest posting spots on some extremely high-traffic blogs.

    Good luck.

      Exactly!

It's silly to go through a 3rd party when you can deal directly with the only person that matters, the webmaster of the site you want a link from.

As guest blogging is different from article writing and more focused on so many things than just getting back links for your website, it is an entirely a different process:

1.Pick a blog category of your interest. It is not advisable to go for any blog for your guest posting. Selection may also involve other parameters such as traffic and reputation of blog.

2.Select a topic which was not discussed before on that blog and start collecting as much information about it and write it in your blog.

3.Contact the author of the blog for your Guest Blog and send him all the respective details.

4.Do not forget that you don't have to just to convert your visitors to your subscribers, but you also have to get more and more involvement from them and never ignore their comments.
