We just know about Penguin & Panda are giant who are eating your rank. But we don't really know what number of hidden updates happen in the search engine and your site ranking dance... In the recent article google emphasising on website design not on link building... Question is Can an eye touching design helps in ranking? How weird you feel it?

"Eye Catching Design" will never be a ranking factor.

It will always be about backlinks period.

Future is challenging as it was never before. Google is making this field more reputable by implementing innovations to the digital market. This introduces the chance to use your tactics more and sharply.
So, if you are learner with modern era and eager to experiment your process tactfully, then you will be on the king seat.
If you are traditional user, then you are in danger.

    Thanks

Its a cat & mouse game.

Google will keep finding new ways to stop and penalize unnatural linking, stupid people will continue finding ways to get 6 months of fame on search engines.

But apart from that the future of SEO is:
    More Social
    More Personalised

The future of SEO is going towards social media. Your website's ranking will be decided on your website's social media profile, ex-poser, user experience, reviews etc. Google likes natural ranking, for that reason it hates SEO.

    Content.. Blah blah blah... Content.
It piss me off this content thing because not all the websites are blogs or webs that are suposed to be informative...
What about online shops? What new and quality content (apart of the blog) are we suposed to have? If we have more or less the same products for almost all the year.. What to do?
Ps: Website is already optimized with all cool stuff like tagging, breadcumbs, microdata, ratings...

You are using anchor text naturally!

But you are building links for home page only, while your site has 30 more pages..

            You also stopped creating content..

            It would look unnatural!

NO! This is NOT a factor... This could help you for more visitors (if you have for example a few good pictures, people can share them in Social Media sites like Facebook) and their friends to visit your website too... But I don't think just a few high quality pictures could help you with ANYTHING for your SERP!

Website design does not matter when it comes to rankings. Good backlinks and good content are the most important factors in getting high rankings. I do think it is a good idea to have an appealing website because this will help keep potential customers on the site. However, for ranking in general, the website design does not matter.

If you have a look at most buyer keywords (for e.g. try popular CB "product name review" queries) after the penguin 2, the first page is crammed with only "authority" sites like amazon, facebook pages, sbwire, businesswire, allvoices, trulia, etc.

The future of SEO in my IMHO is not 1,000,000 links for 5$ but rather just 100 links that are actually updated, aka your backlinks are on sites (your own or others) that are regularly updated and maintained.

So this will only do good:
    1) A network of web 2 properties that is regularly updated and links built to them (and then this network pushes your money pages of course)

    2) A network of your own domains with the above

    3) Keeping a tab of your backlink drops, i.e. how many active, how many lost and sort of maintaining a rhythm...

    4) Diverse profile (this is a given) with links coming from a variety of different sites, locations and ip's. IN short, you can never build less links, but of course, NO "million links for 5$ cr**ness"!!

Things I think wouldn't matter to much:
    1) I dont give a damn how many times your url is shared, liked, tweeted, plus oned, its not moving you up the ranks.
    2) Doesn't matter how much you "engage socially"! Yes it can drive traffic to your site sure, but not helping you for SEO, the topic we're discussing.
    3) Link velocity is misunderstood. If you're getting 10000 forum profiles in day, well, zapped! But if you're getting 10000 social shares through different accounts, no zap!

Finally remember that se updates will always shake and mix results deliberately so that squealers can start squealing! Have patience, things fall back in place if you're not doing the million links thing!

Very strange that google can decide from the design to rank a website, i know that it looks on the quality of contents, and also on the link building. So you should built quality backlinks and to write good content for your website.

I guess that the future of SEO lies in intelligent spiders that can not only detect key words or key phrases but grasp the topic of webpages and understand the subject.

When you start out like that, you are truly lost.

What's with this "we" crapola? Do you have a mouse in your pocket?

The future of SEO is the same as it's always been. There are those that actually
do SEO, and those that keep complaining how they can't keep up.

It's the future of IM-google-shmoozers that people mistakenly think
    is important.

IMers who do nothing but sit around all day thinking how they can
outsmart the next google "update" because the last thing they did
is now toast, are not doing SEO.

    Social integration and social proof.

Shares on social media is going to be ridiculously emphasized in the future.

Search engines want content that people find to be interesting; and the biggest indicator of that is the presence of social sharing.

As long as we have the internet there will be a demand for SEO and the internet looks as though it is here to stay, at least that is until something better comes along.

The Future of SEO is all about being patient.

The days of blasting 10's of thousands of blog comment backlinks with SEnuke or Xrumer are over.

It's all about quality and technique now. With the new updates, Social Signals are confirmed to be a ranking metric now, so getting those Facebook Shares, Re-Tweets, Re-Pins, etc are important. On Page SEO is changing too, now Google seems to prefer your website be designed for humans and not search engines. The more your site seems (to a googlebot) to be too optimized, the better the chance it will get de-ranked or even penalized.

A site with original and unique content, will be ranked better.
When you hear "Content is King" it means no matter how many backlinks you build, if your website is a regurgitated version of other similar sites, your site will not rank well.

Mobile is another growing ranking metric, with the growing number of mobile users, your website will rank higher if it is mobile friendly. This does not mean you have to have a separate mobile version (unless your site needs it), it just means that it should be viewable in a user friendly fashion on iPads, Phones, etc.

With Google busting out over 500 Algorithm Updates Per YEAR, sweating them is going to consume you. If you are doing natural link building, getting links that work, and continuing to grow your social media presence, you will never have to worry about these updates.

New site/page/post = wait a week to 2 weeks after indexed, blast it with (2.0's, videos etc) raw URL/branded links, let it drip feed. Buy high PR private blogs, make a network, make them relevant, link with your targetted KW's to your £ site. Make your £ sites authority sites, provide MASSIVE VALUE at all times.

    Works everytime without fail.

If you start backlinking before, you will trip the algorithm. The algorithm goes after stupid people - know the system, work around the system, fly under the radar.

IT'S JUST A SYSTEM NOT AN ALL SEEING EYE.

    Simples.

P.S. The more you read on this forum the LESS you get done, for the love of GOD take ACTION otherwise you will be sitting here in 4 years time reading crap and still no further from reaching your goals (yes, it took me 4 years to realise that and now I am actually reaching my goals).

P.P.S Yes, just realised this has nothing to do with the question from the OP

To me, the "future" of SEO is like Back to the Future (without Marty Mcfly and Doc)

In the old days of SEO -- before there was a such thing as a link building service -- you needed these things to rank:
    • Great content
    • Awesome design
    • Solid UX
    • Strong branding
    • Marketing skills
    • Lots of emails
And as I look at the landscape today...it's pretty much the exact same thing.

The whole niche site/crap links/xrumer/senukex days were just a blip in the history of SEO.

And like those old hippies that live their lives in the "glory days", many people in SEO still cling to that era like it still exists.

Those days are gone...and they're not coming back.

Now it's all about creating an amazing brand, killer content, stellar UX...and leveraging those things for links.
