How to Improve Search Engine Ranking 2013?

So back links don't work anymore? What can I try that wont break the bank and still get the job done? I'm not looking for the super expensive #1 spot, I'm looking for at least page 2, I see that as completely accomplishable.

    who said backlinks dont work anymore? Backlinks work great its just people need to take more care in where you are getting your backlinks and ensure its not spammy methods for example getting hundreds of low quality links directly to your site.

    If you spend a few hours a day and find backlinks for your site its quite possible to get 2nd or 3rd page rankings as long as you are avoiding over using your keywords in your backlinks and mixing up the type of sources you are getting backlinks from.

    Backlinks still work great.... The key is anchor text diversity and relevance. I'm sure the "relevance" piece is debatable but IMO its important and meaningful.

    Backlinks still work, but they have to be only quality backlinks, i.e. those from relevant sources and preferably contextual. Also having a fair amount of social signals correlates with higher rankings, so don’t ignore social media for getting natural links.     Backlinks work but it should be done along with your content, if you are not updating your site with fresh content and you are doing only link building then it won't look too natural.
