Index Page: Long Article or Write for the Reader?

My index page currently has an article about 350 words long targeting my main keyword. I've been thinking about expanding that article to 1,200 words for only one reason. "They" say longer articles almost consistently give you a boost in the rankings.

I'm not on the first page of google for my very competitive keyword. The site that is (#1), has no article at all on their index page. what they have is links to pages within their site that are subsets of their keyword. For instance, they keyword they're targeting on the index page may be "best burgers." The links on the index page would be, "best burgers in Florida" "best burgers in Ohio" etc, along with a short intro to the page.

This seems to go along with what some are saying about forgetting articles that nobody reads (unless there's legitimate need in your niche) and focus instead on the real information the reader is looking for.

Looking at my competitor as a manual review from google would, I'd place their homepage above my 1,200 word homepage because theirs provides the information the reader is actually looking for. A long winded article would tell me it's only there for SEO purposes.

Anybody have any experience with dumping articles on the homepage and focusing on articleless content?

    That's not correct.

If all I had to do was write long articles of text I would always make sure I had 1,000 words more than competition. Obviously that doesn't work.

You would have a stronger network of internal pages If you took that same 1,200 word article & divided it between multiple internal pages. With multiple laser focused internal pages you can potentially rank 2-3 pages from the same domain for the same [exact] keyword, where a single long page of text will only be able to rank a single page for your main keyword that your targeting.

Like a chapter in a book, spread the relevancy over multiple internal pages. Use relevant internal links to connect all the relevant pages.
